The University of Akron's Department of Communication and Marketing is looking for a full-time back-end web developer to join our team.

Working in a challenging field where the technologies and standards are ever evolving, you will need the tenacity to take on our increasing list of development projects that benefit students, faculty, and staff at UA and beyond. You will learn while you work as part of a team, helping the team develop solutions for customers, designing, building and deploying web content. You will be exposed to and have the opportunity to research and deploy leading-edge technologies of today’s web. Additional responsibilities will include working on back-end development tasks associated with application development projects.
Who are we looking for?
A back-end developer who has basic experience with the back-end of web programming and is eager to continue learning and growing his or her craft professionally. You’ll need exceptional communication skills since you’ll be working alongside project managers, front-end developers and senior developers to implement, test, and debug web projects.
We’re looking for someone who thinks through what they’re writing so that it’s testable, accessible, easy to read, documented and built to last. You’ll also have a keen eye for detail which is required to craft a design in code, as well as the rapport with audiences needed to create clear and correct user interfaces.
Requires 18 months of education or training beyond high school and requires a minimum of 2 years’ experience with all aspects of web development, including web publishing tools and web authoring at the commercial level. Well-qualified candidates will have strong development and problem solving skills. The ability to research and implement new technologies that are solution appropriate. Our required characteristics include:
- Minimum 2 years experience with HTML and CSS
- Demonstrable experience working with server-side technologies (e.g. Java, PHP, .Net)
- Excellent problem solving and communication skills.
- Ability to work as part of a team and individually.
- Demonstrated desire to learn new things.
Prefer candidates with the following:
- Experience with digital design patterns (e.g., responsive, mobile first, material)
- Experience with modern build tools (e.g. Node, Gulp, Grunt, Bower)
- Experience with Sass or Less
- Experience with developing for publishing platforms (e.g., Jekyll, WordPress, Drupal)
- Knowledge of user experience best practices
- Experience with version control systems (e.g., git)
