The primary duties of this position are to work directly with the asphalt paving and patching crew, to assist in a variety of asphalt repairs, and to assist with snow removal during the winter months. This position requires a person who has the ability to work evenings, holidays, weekends, and on-call for snow or other emergency events.

The following duty statements are illustrative of the essential functions of the job and do not include other non-essential or marginal duties that may be required. The County reserves the right to modify or change the duties or essential functions of the job at any time.
Responsible for all asphalt pavement maintenance to include asphalt patching and paver patching. Responsible for proper paver operation, proper asphalt placement including shoveling and raking of the asphalt.
Operates equipment proficiently which includes: asphalt paver, skid steer with various attachments, front end loader, mini excavator, backhoe, and asphalt compaction rollers. Operates trucks including: asphalt patch truck, tractor with low boy trailer or end dump, andtandem axle dump truck with snow plow.
Controls traffic at work site by flagging and/or placing barricades. Performs manual labor duties requiring the use of hand tools such as shovels, picks, axes, saws, power drills, and 60 or 90 lb. jack hammer.
Removes snow from streets and other public thoroughfares; applies anti-icing or de-icing materials onto County roadways using a variety of equipment, including a tandem axle truck.
Serves as lead person in absence of Supervisor. Ensures that all assigned projects meet Arapahoe County asphalt quality and safety standards. Delegates tasks to Light Equipment Operators and Road Maintenance Workers. Sets the appropriate pace to meet weekly and monthly goals.
Performs other duties as assigned.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of road construction methods, materials and specifications; knowledge of the operation and maintenance of all assigned equipment.
Knowledge of safety rules, regulations and practices.
Grader operators must have the ability to read and interpret grade stakes.
Ability to perform strenuous manual labor for extended periods of time.
Ability to follow oral and written instructions and to communicate effectively with assigned personnel; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, other employees, and the general public.
High school graduation or GED equivalent.
Three (3) years' experience with Heavy Highway Equipment with at least two (2) years as a Light Equipment Operator (per Arapahoe County position description).
Possession of a Colorado CDL, "A" driver's license with tanker endorsement.
This position requires successful completion of pre-employment testing which includes an acceptable current motor vehicle check, background check, DOT physical, physical capabilities and drug screen.
Must be able to obtain flagger certification within 10 days of appointment. Flagger training is provided.
This position is required to work on an on-call basis for winter storm duty and other emergency conditions at all hours of the day or night. Shift work for snowstorms may require 16 hour shifts or longer based on the severity of the storm.

Works under the general direction of the Road and Bridge Division Manager and the Operations Manager. Direct supervision is received from the assigned Road & Bridge Supervisor.
Acts as lead worker in the absence of the supervisor. Provides training to other Equipment Operators.
Contacts are with supervisors, management, peers, subordinates, elected officials, customers, and/or vendors. Contacts require the ability to exercise a high degree of interpersonal skills to influence persons at all levels. Incumbent is accountable for the results of the contact.
* Position requires exposure to all weather conditions, high noise levels, dust, fumes, and other road traffic conditions and exposures to all the dangers of working outside, including but not limited to: pollen, animal dander, snakes and insects, bites and stings.
* Employees work indoors and out-of-doors, most of his/her time is spent in the field in often extreme weather conditions and rough terrain.
* Work during evenings, weekends, on-call, or irregular hours will be required based on operational needs.
* Shift work for snowstorms that may require 12 hour shifts.
