Essential Job Duties:
The proposed VEO-C positions will be responsible for operational components of: Bulk Waste and Electronics Collections – scheduled route collections average of 235 sites per week for materials and electronics not accepted in the automated or recycling collection system. Related transport and sorting into appropriate materials bins at the Dearstyne Rolloff Site. Bulk material collections include items such as pallets, crates, discarded furniture, scrap metal, electronics, etc. Recycling and Reuse Collections – customer requested collections of reuse, recycling and unwanted building items and hauling to Dearstyne for recycling or disposal. This is on demand service for campus customers and response time is offered within 1-2 business days of the initial request. Common requests include delivery and pick up of carts for office clean outs, pick up and signature collections of confidential recycling, preparing and distributing materials for reuse in other areas or departments. Events and Projects – Field support to provide special waste/recycling/compost service for campus events and support major activities on campus such as residence hall move in and move out where additional services, monitoring and staff support are needed for collections. Repair, Maintenance, Safety – provide inspection and maintenance of containers related to the collection of waste and recycling on campus. Includes cleaning, proper labeling, delivery, distribution and placement of containers inside and outside of buildings. Inspection and maintenance of assigned trucks and equipment used daily to complete duties and assignments. Perform all work assignments and duties in compliance with established safe work practices. Follow safety and health regulations, policies and procedures. Identifies and resolves potential safety concerns or violations.
Demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Requires appropriate licenses or certifications to operate assigned types of vehicles or equipment.
Departmental Required Skills:
Position serves in a mandatory role and employee must work during adverse weather conditions and may be required to work even if the University is closed to normal operations. Basic computer skills and experience. Must be able to lift up to 30 pounds frequently and up to 60 pounds occasionally, with or without reasonable accommodations. Must be able to communicate effectively verbally with supervisors and the general public and understand verbal and written instructions and other communications regarding work assignments and other matters.
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education:
3-5 yrs experience.
Necessary Licenses or Certifications:
Drivers License NCDL within 60 days.
About the Department/Unit:
The Grounds and Building Services unit provides programs and services which help to maintain the University’s landscape and facilities. In support of the University’s 2000+ acres of campus landscape, services provided include landscape construction, grounds maintenance and comprehensive waste and recycling programs. Campus repair needs in areas such as carpentry, painting, roofing and signage are also provided by this unit for the University’s 14.6 million square feet of teaching, research and administrative space. Additionally, Grounds and Building Services manages mail, auto shop and motor fleet offerings to the campus community.
