The University of North Georgia's Elementary Education/Special Education (ELE/SPED) Department is seeking applications for the position of Assistant/Associate Professor of Elementary/Special Education beginning Fall, 2020. This is a 10-months, tenure track position. Summer teaching is possible but not guaranteed.

In addition to academic rigor, which is a hallmark of the College of Education, the Department of Elementary Education/Special Education is commitment to partnerships with six school systems in the region which allow us to provide our students with long and intensive levels of clinical experience in public elementary school classrooms. UNG’s Elementary/Special Education graduates are highly regarded by regional school districts because of the extensive field experiences they complete as part of their two-year program requirements.
Our program is modeled after the Professional Development Community (PDC) teacher preparation approach which provides opportunities for COE faculty and school district faculty to engage students in a community of collaboration, professionalism, intellectual curiosity, and commitment to service. Partnerships established with the COE teacher education programs and local school systems are designed to create environments that support professional development, personal growth, and academic excellence in the context of service to our students, colleagues, institution, community, and discipline. This PDC model allows for teaching, research, and professional development to be conducted in collaborative, creative, and inclusive groups of faculty peers that celebrate innovation, problem solving, and openness to discussions. Faculty in the COE are expected to model professional and personal integrity, communication skills, passion for teaching, and collaborative support and care of the community that we hope to inculcate in the children served by our partner schools. Specifically, we are searching for a candidate who specializes in elementary-level special education and has at least five (5) years of K-5 teaching experience.

The faculty member is expected to teach specified courses, prepare course materials, provide support and guidance to students, foster professional relationships with public school partners, maintain records pertinent to accreditation, and supervise students in completing field placements. Commitment to a collaborative curriculum development model is expected. The primary teaching location will be in a Professional Development Community on or near the Gainesville campus with the opportunity of additional locations, as needed. General faculty responsibilities in the department include:
- Teach undergraduate and/or graduate courses face to face, hybrid or online;
- Supervise candidates’ field experiences in a professional development community;
- Advise students;
- Maintain active program of research/scholarly activity and publications in area of specialization;
- Provide service to the department, college, university, public schools, and professional community;
- Participate in program review, program assessment, and accreditation activities; and
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- The successful candidate must have familiarity with teaching, learning, and education theories;
- A commitment to being a collaborative member of a PDC model;
- Knowledge of current national and state standards;
- Ability to work collegially with other members of the faculty and utilize opportunities for cross-disciplinary collaboration;
- Possesses professional written and oral communication skills; and
- Demonstrates effective interpersonal skills.
- Doctorate in Special Education or a closely related field is required.
- A minimum of five years of teaching experience in K-5 schools is required.
- Experience teaching special education courses at the college level.
- Distinguished scholarly activity.
- Expertise in the areas of Autism and/or Dyslexia.
- Experience with culturally and linguistically diverse students.
- Demonstrated commitment to creating and leading initiatives that promote equity, diversity, and inclusion within teacher education and higher education.
- Evidence of effective and innovative teaching practices.
- Experience using and modeling technology in educational settings.
- Demonstrated ability to educate for a culturally diverse society.
