Essential Job Duties:
Provide technical support for the Behavioral Animal Medicine service. The incumbent will assist veterinarians with and perform examinations, assessments, treatments, animal handling, and restraint. Participate in client education. Teach 4th-year veterinary students and clients concepts and techniques for behavior modification and low-stress handling. Maintain appropriate medical records. Ensure good communication and collaboration with all ancillary services and other areas of the hospital. Position requires driving for site visits.
Completion of an accredited training program in the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. Some positions may require additional Training, Certifications, or Licensure.
Departmental Required Skills:
- Previous veterinary technician experience in a clinical setting (and preference for 2+ years) - Technical skills: sample collection (i.e. venipuncture), “low stress” animal handling, and positive-reinforcement behavioral techniques. - Ability to effective use MS Word, Excel. - Ability to communicate professionally and effectively at all times and maintain professionalism in emotionally charged / challenging situations. - Excellent customer service skills. - Ability to lift up to 50 pounds. - Ability to work beyond scheduled work hours when needed. - Ability to work effectively as a member of a team and actively participant in problem solving. - Ability to work independently and practice good judgement.
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education:
- Previous veterinary technician experience in a teaching institution - Previous experience with a clinical Behavioral Medicine service - Behavior Specialty Certification (AVBT) - Society of Veterinary Behavior Technicians (SVBT) membership - KPA, IAABC or similar membership - Fear Free certification
Necessary Licenses or Certifications:
- Registered Veterinary Technician in the state of NC or qualified to sit for the NC state exam. - NC Driver's License is required and must be maintained as a condition of employment.
