Performs a variety of clinical and clerical activities to expedite the patient flow and business activities of the medical office. Gives injections/immunizations on a routine, regular basis as patients' needs dictate.
Assists in the maintenance of a therapeutic environment that promotes effective and cost-efficient patient care and that provides for the safety of patients, staff, and visitors. 1. Possesses knowledge about safety policies of the school health program, as well as the established policies and procedures of the organization and school district. 2. Works independently within the established guidelines of the In-School Health program and the organization. 3. Responsible for keeping the health centers adequately stocked with health supplies. 4. Actively participates in the cleaning and disinfecting of the health center. 5. Maintains a friendly, inviting atmosphere in the health center to allow students to feel comfortable in coming to the health center. 6. Prescreens students to evaluate possible medical needs, allergy status, history of illness, and documents such information in the medical record. 7. Keeps District RN/LPNs informed on health care needs of students and assists in obtaining resources to meet those needs. 8. Assists the nurses in opportunities to promote healthy preventative services by tracking and collecting appropriate data. Assists physician and nurse as needed with office procedures and exams. 1. Possesses knowledge and skills necessary to give IM injections/immunizations. 2. Possesses knowledge and skills necessary to assist physician and nurse in performing office procedures or examinations. 3. Possesses knowledge and skills necessary to perform various clinical tasks such as EKG's and venipuncture, depending on the practice. 4. Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to patients of all ages. 5. Participates in learning new procedures, policies, equipment and treatments. Assists the District RN/LPNs to ensure quality health care is delivered to the students in the school based health centers. 1. Reviews Emergency/Medical History forms for completeness and appropriateness of information. 2. Questions parents/guardians to clarify questionable answers on the Emergency/Medical history form. 3. Monitors and maintains accurate, up to date records of school compliance programs for immunizations, physical examinations and visual/hearing screenings. 4. Reports all non-compliance cases to the Registered Nurse and/or building Principal in a timely manner. 5. Monitors and maintains accurate, up-to-date cumulative health care services to all students. 6. Assists nursing staff by preparing the students for procedures or office visits by taking vital signs (height, weight, pulse, and blood pressure) and reports abnormal results to the nurses immediately. 7. Assists nursing staff by screening students for general medical health care needs. 8. Supports the nurses in their day to day duties by sharing necessary information to assure the delivery of quality health care to students. 9. Attends to the daily health needs of the students referred for services by the teacher or school staff. 10. Possesses flexibility in the work environment in order to promote a smooth, orderly flow of patients through the school based health centers in a timely and efficient manner. 11. Promptly and appropriately charts all student visits in the approved computer system. 12. Ensures required documents are kept secure to maintain confidentiality. 13. Provides adequate and competent first aid services to students. 14. Ensures required documents are in place for students taking daily medication at school. 15. Administers medications, following policy, to students taking daily medication at school prescribed by the Primary Care Provider. 16. Monitors and maintains accurate, current records of all students taking medications. 17. Maintains appropriate records/documentation, approve re-admittance and make parental contacts as appropriate. 18. Enters and maintains accurate student health information in the computerized student information management system. 19. Completes, maintains and communicates all communicable disease incidences to the Registered Nurse and all other appropriate agencies. 20. Assists Registered Nurse with health clinics and sports physicals. 21. Assists Registered Nurse and/or building Principal in the completion of other health care related duties/responsibilities as deemed appropriate and necessary. Assists the nurse and physician staff to assure quality health care and a smooth, orderly flow of patients through the office. 1. Assists nursing staff by preparing the patients for exams or office visits by taking vital signs (height, weight, pulse, and blood pressure). 2. Assists nursing staff by screening patients for general medical, and by obtaining lab specimens from patients, if needed. 3. Supports physician and nurses in their day to day duties by sharing necessary information to assure the delivery of quality health care to patients. 4. Possesses flexibility in the work environment in order to promote a smooth, orderly flow of patients through the office in a timely and efficient manner. Assists the Registered Nurse as needed with office procedures and exams. 1. Possesses knowledge and skills necessary to give IM injections/immunizations. 2. Possesses knowledge and skills necessary to assist the Registered Nurse in performing office procedures or examinations. 3. Possesses knowledge and skills necessary to perform various clinical tasks. 4. Possess knowledge and skills necessary to administer medications. 5. Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to patients of all ages. 6. Participates in learning new procedures, policies, equipment and treatments. 7. Possesses knowledge and skills necessary to obtain adequate lab specimens for testing. 8. Performs in-office patient lab testing and quality control in compliance with medical provider’s orders and office lab procedures/policies. Assures that patient education is provided when appropriate, in a caring and professional manner. Assists the clerical staff in assuring optimal workflow and quality patient care. 1. Provides instructions to patients when necessary on preparing for tests, surgery, etc. 2. Assists the nursing staff with patient education involving a wide variety of health related subjects. 3. Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development in order to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret appropriate information required identifying each patient's age specific needs. 4. Participates in continuing education by attending seminars and various meetings. 5. Assists the clerical staff by answering the telephone and taking messages; scheduling appointments for surgery, tests and office visits; retrieving charts for the day; filing any papers or charts that need to be filed. 6. Assists with a full range of front office operations as required. 7. Assists the clerical staff by copying and collating medical records and patient education materials. 8. Competent in the use of all office computer systems.
Education: 1. Certificate Program in the field(s) of medical office assisting required 2. Associate's Degree in the field(s) of healthcare preferred 3. Certification is required through the AAMA, NHA or American Medical Technologists (AMT) - department specific Credentials: 1. CPR 2. Certified as medical assistant by approved organization listed above. Experience: 1. 1-3 years of experience in/with clinical and clerical experience in a physician office, computer knowledge, and detail oriented preferred. 2. 1-3 years of experience in/with successfully working with a wide variety of people required.
