POSITION SUMMARY: The purpose of the job is to establish and maintain a sterile/clean field and safe environment throughout the endoscopy procedure, to assess instrumentation and equipment needs, and to anticipate and provide instrumentation and equipment needs for the gastroenterologist/surgeon’s use in a timely manner to enhance patient outcomes.\\
Successful completion of a technical or vocational school surgical technician program. Two year degree or certificate from an accredited two year college, university or technical school with qualification as a Certified Surgical Technician.
Associate Degree Surgical Technician, SGNA Certification
2 years Endoscopy Tech
Basic Life Support-HCP, Required. Certified Nursing Assistant, Preferred, SGNA
Basic computer skills, plus analytical skills to determine job priorities, multi-task and work independently are required.
Assists with Diagnostic, Therapeutic and Advanced Endoscopy procedures including EUS, ERCP, RFA and argon plasma coagulation.
Verifies that patient’s information listed on chart, EMR and armbands is correct.
Checks that all specimens are in designated labeled containers and pathology forms match.
Ensures that all equipment is properly sterilized and disinfected and returned in clean excellent condition.
Performs routine tests on equipment to rule out defects before use.
Operates machines with high levels of disinfectants along with steam sterilizers.
Performs tests on equipment in scope cleaning room. Maintains all logs daily and accurately.
Performs ATP testing on equipment to ensure effective disinfection of scopes and equipment.
Keeps count of items stocked in Endoscopy room. Ensures stock in rooms are not expired.
Maintains procedure rooms and reports defects to biomed and facilities timely and accurately.
Demonstrates knowledge and practice of basic patient care concepts: Performs and/or provides scrub assistance during procedures which reflect awareness of anatomy, necessary principles, skills, supplies and adequate knowledge base. Assists the circulating nurse in implementing the perioperative plan of care to include: patient positioning, confirmation/preparation of operative site, updating physician preference card, care of operative specimens and room turnover. Demonstrates the application of the principles of asepsis: Adheres to unit specific standards, policies and procedures for aseptic technique.
Demonstrates the ability to perform the role of first scrub on all basic surgical cases: Anticipates the needs of the surgeon, which includes passing instruments, sutures and other items appropriate to the procedure. Establishes and maintains and organized sterile field. Assists the surgeon by retracting tissue, holding instrumentation to provide exposure and cutting suture under the direct supervision of the surgeon. Supply Room Access: Enters supply room(s) on nursing units as needed to perform necessary job functions. Refrains from manipulating or removing any intravenous fluids that are stored in the area
Selects proper sterilization method of instruments/equipment: sterilizes prior to procedures, as necessary and verifies instruments as sterile. Takes corrective action when any unsafe practice, conditions or breaks in aseptic technique occur and reports information to the circulating nurse. Demonstrates basic surgical case preparation skills: Assists with pulling cases and checks case cart for completeness, obtains supplies and equipment and determines them to be in good working order before a case begins. Prepares the operating room by opening sterile supplies, instruments, and sutures based on scheduled procedure and surgeon preference card. Follows policies for scrubbing, gowning, gloving, setting up back table, draping and counting with the circulating nurse
