The Engineer analyzes in-service and proposed equipment, structures, and facilities to develop recommendations and Scopes of Work as a means of ensuring the continued and increased reliability of Transmission, Distribution, and Substation equipment within Duquesne Light’s service territory. The Engineer is expected to work independently on developing and issuing work products to adequately describe design requirements that meet or exceed applicable safety, structural, and geotechnical codes. The ability to work independently as well as in teams is necessary. The Engineer must be able to monitor project based and programmatic work in a manner that ensures completion in a safe, fiscally responsible, and timely manner.
The Sr. Engineer develops engineering solutions to complex issues, develop financial estimates for projects developed by other engineers, provides mentoring and guidance to less experienced engineers, and serves as a subject matter expert on civil engineering issues to other departments within and outside of Asset Management.
- Transmission and distribution line Engineering (25%) – The engineer analyzes in-service and proposed equipment, structures, and facilities to develop recommendations for electrical power lines at various voltages. The Engineer must be knowledgeable in transmission line design philosophies, constructability of the transmission lines, and regulatory requirements. The Engineer must be proficient in PLS-CADD, TOWER, PLS-Pole, and MFAD.
- Structural Engineering (25%) – The engineer analyzes in-service and proposed equipment, structures, and facilities to develop recommendations for concrete foundations and structural connections. The Engineer recommends and prepares work products to ensure that sound engineering principles are employed in accordance with all applicable Duquesne Light Company standards and federal, state, and local codes - ASCE, AISC, ASTM, ANSI, OSHA, etc…
- Geotechnical Engineering (15%) – The Engineer must be knowledgeable in geotechnical engineering – to understand soil borings; to be able to assign parameters; to be able to design concrete pads or caisson foundations; and to be able to use MFAD. The Engineer must be able to learn and apply knowledge of the geology of the Pittsburgh region, to be able to understand mine maps, to complete slope stability analyses, design solutions for landslides, and must be familiar with limits of disturbance.
- Environmental Engineering (10%) – The Engineer must be knowledgeable in grading designs, erosion & sedimentation control plans, NPDES permits, ACCD/BCCD permits. The Engineer must be able to manage all tasks, understand the priority of these tasks, and work with vendors to complete permits.
- Standards (5%) – The Engineer is involved in developing company standards for civil engineering and transmission line engineering designs. The Engineer works collaboratively with other engineers and DLC departments to develop, documents, standards, and process improvements.
- Field Investigations (20%) – The Engineer must visit the field to support current construction projects, maintenance, emergent work, field verification, field inspection, construction inspection, etc… The Engineer must be available to visit the field (including weekends and evenings) in support of emergent work.
- The Engineer provides thorough updates on a weekly, monthly and annual basis for the work plan to the Manager, Civil Asset Management. The Engineer participates in Asset Management Staff and Safety meetings. The Engineer attends external and internal civil engineering design courses. The Engineer provides technical support to employees to assist in their learning of structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, environmental engineering, etc..
- The Engineer will occasionally be required to assume a storm role to support restoration activities associated with power outages due to storms. Emergent work may require evening and overnight support throughout the length of the event.
- Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET accredited university or college.
- PE License
- Minimum of 3 years of relevant experience.
- Must possess strong organizational, computer, and problem solving skills.
- Must embrace a safety culture and maintain safe work environment for co-workers and the public.
- Must possess valid driver’s license and be able to drive to various company locations. May be required to drive in inclement weather to support emergency service restoration obligations.
- Utility experience
- Experience in PLS-CADD, RISA 3D, MFAD or willingness to acquire skills in these software.
- Work location is typical office environment - desk and computer work is required. Evening and weekend work may be required.
- Must be able to walk on uneven ground to various facilities and right-of-way locations for field investigations as required.
- Must be able to bend, reach, walk, and lift with equipment weighing up to 50lbs.
Primary Focus is on daily deliverables, outputs and reporting. Typically accountable for managing ones own time and work flow. Responsibilities are generally tactical in nature and work is typically complex in nature requiring the incumbent to draw on previous knowledge to perform role. Has a well established capabilities, acts as a resource to less experienced staff on routine issues.
Problems and issues faced are vague. Draws on significant past experience to perform role. Proficient in the body of knowledge of given discipline or speciality area. Accountable for direct level of reasoning and decision making.
