CRJ is a unique, 140 year old Boston-based nonprofit organization that provides direct care as well as research/consulting services within the areas of the Mental Health and the Criminal Justice/Public Policy field. The Crime and Justice Institute (CJI), a division of Community Resources for Justice (CRJ), is a non-profit organization working at the local, state, and national level to improve public safety and the delivery of justice. CJI provides technical assistance, research and other services to improve outcomes in the corrections system, policing, pretrial, re-entry, community supervision, juvenile justice, and more. For example, for the past 10 years, CJI has provided technical assistance to the Justice Reinvestment Initiative, a public-private partnership of the Department of Justice and the Pew Charitable Trusts, helping more than 15 states develop and adopt policies to reduce the unnecessary use of prison, detention, and commitment and to improve recidivism reduction measures. With many staff who have worked as practitioners and researchers in criminal and juvenile justice systems across the country, our team brings decades of experience developing evidence-based, data-driven policies, managing complex processes with diverse stakeholders, and driving systems-level organizational change.
This position will support, and in some cases oversee, the development and implementation of initiatives related to criminal and juvenile justice policy and practice. Candidates must be capable of working with large and sometimes incomplete datasets and providing data-related technical assistance to local, state, tribal, and national organizations.
The ideal candidate for this position is able to work efficiently, is well-organized and detail-oriented, and can prioritize quickly and confidently. The position requires extensive writing assignments; qualified candidates will have familiarity with current criminal justice research and exhibit excellent writing and critical thinking / analytic skills as well as comfort with an intensive editing process. Candidates must be able to work independently as well as part of multiple teams. The ability to multi-task in a fast-paced and virtually-based work environment is critical. Travel is an expected component of most of CJI’s projects and will be required for this position.
Duties / Responsibilities:
• Clean, merge, and restructure complex federal, state, and local criminal justice administrative datasets for analysis.
• Identify the best possible uses for data in a policy and political context, including responding to stakeholder questions and providing actionable analysis.
• Design research studies and collect quantitative and qualitative data through file review, structured interviews, surveys, and other methods of data collection as needed.
• Forecast institutional and community supervision populations based on past trends.
• Work closely with policy team and stakeholders to make assumptions for and project the impact of new policies on institutional and community supervision populations.
• Supplement original data analysis with federal, state, and local data reports and research.
• Work with clients and stakeholders to identify, collect, and track performance measures during and after implementation of policy changes.
• Ensure data storage security and safeguarding for assigned projects.
• Express statistical concepts, research findings, and policy ideas clearly and concisely in a compelling way to convince or assist others, both in writing and orally.
• Help to develop policy solutions within practical and politically accountable contexts.
• Coordinate data collection, coding, entry, and analysis for research / evaluation projects.
• Develop and deliver presentations regarding evidence-based corrections practices to varied audiences, including line staff, mid-managers, executives, and policy makers.
Bachelor’s degree required. Advanced degree related to criminal justice, public policy, or applied statistics preferred. Preference will be given to candidates with work experience in corrections policy, administration, or research.
Knowledge / Skills / Experience Required
• Five-years’ work experience—or equivalent—in criminal justice and/or juvenile justice research, policy or practice.
• Experience with data management and quantitative data analysis using SPSS, STATA, or R; proficient in Microsoft Office products (e.g., Excel, Word)
• Strong analytical and critical thinking skills.
• Strong writing and public speaking skills.
• Motivated and independent thinker.
• Ability to interact with a variety of people, both in-person and virtually, in a professional and collaborative manner.
• Ability to coordinate and respond to multiple priorities with tight deadlines.
• Willingness and ability to travel, and work flexible hours when needed.
