What You'll Contribute:
The Director, Corporate Communications is a leader in Sallie Maes dynamic,
fast -paced Communications department. The Director develops and executes
communications strategies on a variety of consumer and corporate topics to
earn positive media coverage for Sallie Mae, increase overall brand
awareness, and promote the companys various industry leading products and
services. The Director, Corporate Communications assists in the development
of the public relations editorial calendar, researches and writes news
releases, identifies trends, and pitches potential story ideas. The
Director also crafts messaging, assists in drafting the companys major
research reports and prepares executives for media-related opportunities,
He/she also monitors related news coverage, develops relationships with
media, and positively represents the company to external parties. The
Director also works with our external PR agency and researches, vets, and
pursues media opportunities to effectively position the company and support
its business objectives.
What You'll Do:
50% - News Release, Message Development and Content Creation
Writes effective content including news releases, blog articles,
messages/talking points, fact sheets, opinion pieces, and internal
communications (as needed), on a variety of corporate business news and
Engages with and develops strong relationships with internal business
partners to identify key messages and public relations opportunities.
Coordinates approvals from subject matter experts, legal and compliance
for news releases and supporting materials.
Assists in creation of industry leading research reports.
40% - Media Relations
Under supervision of VP Corporate Communications, represents the company
with business, personal finance, education, consumer and trade journalists
Conducts media outreach (pitching) on various topics.
Addresses incoming inquiries from media and other external parties.
Researches and assists in coordination response.
Monitors relevant media coverage and blog posts to identify new contacts
and strengthen relationship with existing contacts.
Helps manage and oversee outside PR agency.
10% - Project Management, Planning and Crisis Management
Support department leadership in public affairs and external-facing
enterprise initiatives, collaborating with government relations, investor
relations, employee communications, subsidiaries and centers.
Support crisis-related content and activities.
Helps maintain department policies and procedures.
Provides backup media monitoring and analysis as needed.
What You Bring:
Seven to ten years of experience in a corporate communications/public
relations position or public relations agency, ideally related to financial
Extensive experience drafting news releases, creating media lists, and
Excellent writing, editing, communication, and media interview skills
Experience as an on the record spokesperson, preferably with both
national and local media, effectively delivering key messages
Proven track record in developing relationships with media
Sound professional judgment with ability to identify risks and
Understanding of regulatory and legal environment, fair disclosure needs
of a publicly traded company
Experience with news retrieval services, reporter databases, news release
distribution, Associated Press style
Extensive experience in Windows operating systems with advanced knowledge
of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Adobe Acrobat
Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously and under tight
Ability to work under pressure, in fast paced environment
Focus on corporate reputation, image and risk management
Strategic planning experience
Ability to work independently and collaboratively with other team members
and across departments and with senior-level executives and external
