The Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy (AURA) is a consortium of 40+ US institutions and four international affiliates that operates world-class astronomical observatories. AURA’s role is to establish, nurture, and promote public observatories and facilities that advance innovative astronomical research. AURA is responsible for managing the operations of the Gemini Observatory, the National Optical Astronomical Observatory, the National Solar Observatory, the Space Telescope Science Institute, and the construction of the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope and the Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope (DKIST) under cooperative agreements with the National Science Foundation and NASA.
The DKIST IT&C Observatory Technician (Electrical/Electronics), or Electrical Technician, will provide support to Integration, Testing and Commissioning (IT&C) Team on site as directed by the IT&C Electrical/Electronics Technician Group Leader. The Electrical/Electronics Technician will participate in the development and execution of maintenance programs as new subsystems come on-line. As the IT&C program develops the technician will become an integral part of the IT&C team responsible for development of new sub-systems and maintenance of existing commissioned facility equipment.
- Installation, checkout, and operation of Electrical and Electronics sub-systems, systems, and equipment under the direction of a supervisory engineer.
- Perform technical activities including selection of components, assembly, troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance including analog/digital hardware, communications, DC and AC systems.
- Execute observatory system maintenance; assist in the development of planned maintenance on new sub-systems.
- Identify discrepancies in documentation, red-line drawings, procedures, and reports for updating.
- Participate in the site acceptance testing of sub-system equipment and any associated maintenance training.
- Ensure that laboratory facility bench stock, consumables, spares, tools, and test equipment are maintained.
- Assist in solving design problems as required, achieving assigned project objectives.
- Solve coordination problems of a technical nature directly or in conjunction with other members of a project team.
- Assist other technical support personnel as necessary.
- Complies with technical requirements and approved time schedules of assigned work.
- Monitors and reports results of activities and notes unusual situations.
- Builds, assembles, modifies, repairs, troubleshoots and maintains equipment for a project.
- Work in accordance with applicable safety standards (including NEC) and for safety of operations in areas under purview. Reports any unsafe conditions and practices.
- Prepares technical documentation for use by technicians, operators, engineers, and scientific staff.
- Other tasks as directed by management.
- Associate’s degree, military schools, or college level courses in Electronics, Electrical Engineering Technology or equivalent combination of trades/skill training and demonstrated work experience sufficient to meet job requirements.
- Experience with relevant technology or engineering support functions.
- Ability to fine pitch solder, wire cable connectors, assemble electronics boards and circuit assemblies.
- Ability interpret and generate electronics schematics.
- Ability to test, troubleshoot, and repair digital and analog electronic circuits to component level using a range of test equipment including oscilloscopes, signal generators, and multimeters. .
- Ability to speak and write effectively, including preparation and presentation of reports.
- Ability to thrive in a culturally diverse team environment.
- Willingness to actively participate in team safety meetings and adhere to (and advocate for) safety procedures and protocols.
- Sensitive to and respectful of cultural and environmental issues.
- Basic computer skills
- 2 or more years relevant work history
- Aptitude for work with electro-mechanical systems across a broad range of operation, maintenance, repair and upgrade activities.
- Broad range of experience/interest covering a number of the following areas:
- Experience in single phase and medium voltage three phase electrical systems
- Experience of working in an Astronomical or Scientific Laboratory environment.
- Motion control, digital and analog servo systems.
- infrared arrays and/or CCDs and controllers
- programmable logic controllers (PLC).
- surface mount technology (SMT) assembly and repair
- HVAC/R systems
- CAT5/CAT6 cable termination
- Fiber optics termination.
- Servicing and repair of high vacuum cryogenic scientific instruments.
- Optical mirror cleaning and/or coating.

- Must possess sufficient mobility, strength or dexterity in both arms and hands and both legs to a) grasp, push, pull, turn or otherwise manipulate tools and mechanisms; b) push, shove, pull or otherwise safely and efficiently manipulate tools or mechanisms; c) lift, hold, maneuver, objects of 50 lbs or more; d) maintain balance while performing work; e) remove parts, systems, tools of 50 lbs or more
- There will be occasional working at height utilizing PPE
- The position will be based at the Haleakala (DKIST) facility and ability to work at 10,000’ elevation, sometimes during inclement weather, is required.
- Occasional travel between the mainland US and Hawaiian Islands may be necessary.
- Availability to work varying shifts, which may include nights and/or weekends
