Description of Job
The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) is looking for an Electronics Specialist to provide expertise on fiber programs and projects within southeastern Colorado, including inspecting, troubleshooting, maintaining, and documenting fiber-optic assets. Will provide guidance and direction in the installation, maintenance and repair of fiber, broadband, cellular equipment, and other communication systems. Will also perform technical installation, troubleshooting and repair of electronic, electro-mechanical systems and communication equipment. Will provide software programs, coordination plans, time of day signal sequences for traffics signal operation, equipment and hardware. Responsible for supporting the Data Center located in Denver Metro.
Major duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
+ Provide expertise on electronic, electro-mechanical and communication equipment selection, installation, preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, repairs, and upgrades to resolve operational equipment issues.
+ Provide expertise on communication systems, regeneration systems or structures and network systems or equipment troubleshooting, maintenance and repair. This includes cellular, broadband, wireless, microwave, fiber optic and hard wired communications systems and equipment.
+ Troubleshoot equipment issues; oversee implementation of changes or upgrades to existing site or system configurations.
+ Support the operations of the Data Center in Denver Metro.
+ Provide expertise for new fiber installations, splicing, fiber-optic cable repairs, tests and collect fiber-optic cable characteristics.
+ Troubleshoot fiber-optic cable damage such as micro/macro bends, mechanical terminations, broken or poor fusion splices, and full fiber-optic cable breaks.
+ Direct staff and contractors on how the damaged cable will be repaired, including who is responsible for which actions and financial liabilities.
+ Perform second level testing of failed equipment returned from the field.
+ Develop, test, and install new or modified traffic signal software programs, coordination plans, time of day signal sequences, electronic and electro-mechanical hardware, communication and detection equipment and systems.
+ Use required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), and evaluate daily assignments for potential safety concerns and address each issue. Perform work in a safe manner both for position and others in the work area.
+ Ensure all work is documented on work orders and plan sets.
+ Provide technical training on devices and communication methodologies. Create maintenance guidelines or practices on new systems and devices deployed into the field.
+ Work collaboratively with project engineers in reviewing plans and identifying best possible alternative to design issues.
+ Supervise and coach employees; develop performance plans, conduct performance reviews; resolve employee conflicts, assign work, approve timesheets, leave requests;
+ Other job duties as assigned.
+ Primarily 5:30 AM – 4:00 PM work hours, Monday-Thursday
+ The average work week is 40 hours a week, with periodic overtime due to emergencies or inclement weather
+ Frequent travel required throughout Southeastern Colorado Region to complete job duties
+ Occasional overnight travel within Colorado
+ Required to operate CDOT vehicles
+ Required to be in the 24/7 on-call rotation for traffic signal after hour service calls along with ITS service calls
+ Required to respond to emergencies outside regular work hours and work overtime, including weekends and holidays
+ Required to work on ladders and/or bucket trucks at heights from 10-50 feet
+ Exposure to loud noises
+ Exposure to fumes, odors, gases, dusts, etc. that may affect breathing, eyes and skin
+ Exposure to electrical voltage up to 600V and electrical shock
+ Required to lift up to 100 lbs
+ Required to work in close proximity to heavy traffic
+ Required to work in extreme temperatures and weather conditions for long periods of time - hot and cold
+ Due to locations of some of the equipment, must be physically able to work at 11,000 feet altitude.
Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

+ Four years of technical experience repairing, maintaining, installing, modifying, calibrating, certifying, or fabricating electrical and electronic equipment and facilities and fiber-optic assets INCLUDING two years at the fully operational or lead work level. (Please detail this experience in your application)
+ Equipment and devices should primarily be in one or more of the following areas: telecommunication electronics (e.g. cellular, modem), Sonet and Ethernet, close circuit and detection cameras or equipment, radios, traffic signal equipment and programming, fiber optics (wireless and/or hardwired) and Intelligent Transportation Systems. Experience must have included work with fiber-optic assets and computers/information technology.
+ A current, valid driver's license is required for this position as it requires operating a state or personal motor vehicle to perform one or more essential functions of the position.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Must be willing and able to obtain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class A or B within 6 months of hire.
SUBSTITUTION: An associate's degree or successful completion of the equivalent of 60 semester hours of training at an accredited college or university or recognized non-correspondence technical school with 30 semester hours of course work in electronics or electrical engineering may be substituted for two years of the required general experience. The Exceptional Applicant will be an experienced Electronics Specialist and will possess the proven ability or accomplishment in the following:
+ Demonstrated success with the duties listed in the Description of the Job section;
+ Highest work/personal ethics and integrity;
+ Have an active Colorado Journeyman Electrical License;
+ Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the theories, principles, and best practices of digital and analog electronic theory, telecommunications, and computer wireless networks;
+ Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the theories, principles, and best practices of communication protocols such as IP/TCP/UDP/FTP;
+ Comprehensive knowledge and experience in installing, repairing, replacing, and troubleshooting a wide variety of electronic systems and equipment;
+ Knowledge and understanding of computer hardware implementation and handling;
+ Knowledge and understanding of data center requirements and operations;
+ Knowledge and understanding of point-to-point, point-to-multi-point, and microwave, and other wireless communications;
+ Knowledge and understanding of fiber optic cabling handling, termination and splicing;
+ Knowledge and understanding of fiber optic and wireless transceivers, transmitters, receivers, repeaters, single mode and multi-mode applications;
+ Knowledge and understanding of electronic programming using various media, software, or applications;
+ Knowledge and understanding of traffic signal operations, programming, and installation;
+ Knowledge and understanding of ITS devices (e.g. traffic signals, ramp meters, Variable Message Signs, Close Circuit TV, radar, and/or microwave);
+ Knowledge and understanding of regular and specialized tools, such as optical time-domain reflectometer (OTDR), spectrum analyzer, and power meter;
+ Knowledge and understanding of computer security protocols;
+ Strong leadership, supervision, and mentoring skills;
+ Excellent project management and work scheduling skills;
+ Strong oral and written communication skills;
+ Experience working with multiple and diverse stakeholders, with sensitivity to their needs and priorities;
+ Ability to work effectively in both independent and team situations;
+ Strong attention to detail and accuracy;
+ Excellent reasoning, analytical, troubleshooting, and problem solving ability;
+ Traffic control coursework is a plus;
+ Passion for safety;
+ Fluency in MS Office Suite (Outlook Word, Excel), SAP, Google Applications, and the ability to quickly learn new software.
