Job Title: Kramer Campus School Nurse/Receptionist

NYOS, an acronym for "Not Your Ordinary School", is an open-enrollment PK-12 public charter school with 2 campuses and over 900 students, located in North Austin. At NYOS Charter School, we educate the whole student. We foster a collegial PreK-12 program that challenges each learner with rigorous academics, innovative strategies, and expectations for civic engagement.
NYOS is searching for a School Nurse / Receptionist to support Pre-Kindergarten - Third grades at our Kramer campus. This role combines the duties of a School Nurse with those of a front-desk Receptionist. The ideal candidate is self-motivated and comfortable working under minimal supervisionand remains calm and organized in the face of constant interruptions. Candidates should possess accountability and strong work ethic and become a model of professional, ethical, and responsible behavior for our students.
- Graduate of an accredited professional nursing education program
- At Minimum a valid vocational nurse license (LVN) to practice professional nursing in Texas from the Texas Board of Nursing
- Certified by Texas Department of Health to conduct vision and hearing screening
- Current CPR Certification
- Two years nursing experience, preferably in community health
- Knowledge of health appraisal to identify student health needs
- Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
- Ability to implement policies and procedures
- Bilingual in English and Spanish (Preferred)
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
- Provide direct care utilizing professional assessment skills, the nursing process, and established school health protocols.
- Carryout first aid and emergency procedures for ill and injured students.
- Conduct screening activities including measuring height and weight, testing vision and hearing, and examining spinal cord and scalp.
- Serve as health advocate for students.
- Notify parents of accident or illness and secure medical care for students in emergency cases (if parents or emergency contact cannot be reached).
- Coordinate management system to administer medications to students at school. Administer medications according to district policy and procedures.
- Establish and implement effective procedures for mandatory screening programs. Make referrals as necessary.
- Develop and coordinate continuing evaluation of campus health program and make changes based on findings.
- Educate faculty and staff as needed on health related topics.
- Serve as health liaison between school, physicians, parents, and community.
- Assess student problems and make appropriate referrals working with students, teachers, parents, and medical and health care professionals as needed.
- Participate in Admission, Review, and Dismissal Committee, crisis team, and school committees as required.
- Communicate regularly with Principal, school Director of Operations, school counselor, teachers, parents, food services, and other staff regarding health services issues.
- Review, evaluate, and maintain immunization records.
- Compile, maintain, and file all physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents required, including clinic records and accurate, updated health records on all students.
- Requisition supplies and equipment needed to maintain clinic inventory.
- Comply with policies established by federal and state laws, Texas Department of Health rule, State Board of Education rule, and board policy in health services area.
- Report potential health and safety hazards to principal.
- Comply with all district and campus routines and regulations.
- Maintain certification in CPR, vision and hearing screening, and as a health screener.
Campus Receptionist Services
- Communicate effectively with diverse groups; maintain confidentiality; meet deadlines and schedules as required.
- Set priorities and establish and maintain effective working relationships with all school stakeholders.
- Receive visitors to the school and ensure the sign in/sign out procedures are followed in accordance with the school's guidelines.
- Manage processes required to support substitute teachers.
- Distribute tardy slips to students who arrive late to school; maintain documentation of notes pertaining to absences when provided by parent/guardian.
- Maintain appearance of front desk area, workroom, health area, and outdoor entrance area.
- Maintain and procure necessary supplies for instructional and administrative staff as necessary.
- Receive mail, packages, and other items dropped off on campus and distribute appropriately.
- Manage school's student picture scheduling.
- Collect fees and other monetary deposits as required.
- Monitor students as required.
- Manage campus white board messaging boards and monthly event calendar.
- Assist with campus emergency drills as required.
- Perform other related duties, as assigned, for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
- Maintain strict confidentiality regarding information concerning students, parents, staff, and classroom incidents.
- Adhere to ethical and legal standards and model behavior that is professional and responsible.
- Participate in approved professional development to improve skills related to job assignment.
- Follow NYOS standard procedures for communication, interaction, and discipline as outlined in the NYOS Staff Handbook.
- Travel between campuses as required for completion of job duties.
- Follow standardized practices and procedures.
- Maintain emotional control under stress.
- Assume exposure to bacteria and communicable diseases.
