Licensed Nursing Assistant (LNA)
The Endoscopy Technician is responsible for assisting in the care of patients undergoing Diagnostic and Therapeutic Gastroenterologic procedures. General areas of responsibility include assisting in patient care, care of instruments and equipment. The Endoscopy Technician will follow the Job Standards and Clinical Practice Criteria as outlined by the Society of Gastroenterology Nurses Association (SGNA). The Core Curriculum for Gastroenterology shall be the clinical reference source for the department of endoscopy.
Patient Population Served:
The Endoscopy Technician is expected to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care based on the physical ability, intellectual development, psychosocial, education and safety needs of the pediatric, adult and geriatric patient in the endoscopy department.
Essential Position Functions:
The following function must be able to be carried out by the incumbent with or without reasonable accommodation:
Patient Care Functions:
Assists the RN with data collection on admission and throughout the surgical stay.
Collects specimens and assists in the performance of procedures within the scope of CNA practice.
Documents selected information on various nursing forms.
Observes and reports patient's needs and responses.
Organizes and prioritizes work and patient needs. Demonstrates good judgment in analyzing facts and conditions to determine what actions should be taken or reported to the Registered Nurse.
Assists patients as they progress through recovery process (i.e. nutrition, ambulation, personal hygiene).
Utilizes knowledge of growth and development to provide care for patients with age specific needs.
Assists in the admission, transfer and discharge process of patients.
Demonstrate Technical competency in instrument and equipment care.
Knowledge of the decontamination Process is essential. Terminal cleaning and sterilization of the endoscopy equipment.
Maintain the instruments and equipment, and arrange for repair when required.
Assist the physician and RN during Diagnostic and Therapeutic procedures.
Respond to emergency situations as directed by the RN.
Provide and maintain a safe environment for the patient and staff by complying with Regulatory Agency requirements and standards set forth by Professional Organizations. (SGNA)
Be knowledgeable about professional and practice issues related to the field of Endoscopy / Gastroenterology (SGNA).
Comply with ethical, professional, and legal standards inherent in patient care and professional conduct.
Participate in Organizational Performance Improvement (PI) activities as directed.
Demonstrates a positive attitude which promotes an atmosphere of warmth and caring.
Maintain Patient Dignity, Confidentiality and safety.
Assists with transfers and discharge of patients.
Recognizes equipment/endoscopy unit specific problems, is able to troubleshoot and reports to staff RN.
Attends staff meetings and mandatory department inservices.
Is dependable, punctual, and does not abuse sick time.
Assists with stocking, cleaning, and maintains inventory PAR levels for Endoscopy, ERCP, and Bronchoscopy equipment.
Cooperates with ancillary services to expedite the patient's plan of care.
Participates as a team member to achieve optimal patient outcomes.
Non-Essential Position Functions:
Performs other duties as assigned or as judgment of necessity dictates.
New Hampshire Licensed Nurses Aide, Medical Assistant, CST or Basic EMT Certification
Education: High School Diploma or Equivalency.
Training and Experience: Must have a working knowledge of hospital and Nursing Service
policies and procedures as they pertain to the job. On-the-job orientation program established.
Working knowledge of underlying principles and standards that satisfy regulatory requirements for the following entities: CDS, CMS
