About the Job
Overall Responsibility:
Accurately interprets contract documents and provides a quality estimate for each project in keeping with how that project will most likely be constructed. Effectively uses technology, experience, and intuition to assist in the acquisition of highly desirable work that ensures growth in the company s backlog and profit margin.
Key Performance Areas:
General Business
Assists V.P./Director of Pre-Construction and Estimating in the performance of risk / benefit analysis that includes identification of risks and opportunities.
Provides input to V.P./Director of Pre-Construction and Estimating regarding possible sources of work and best available bidding opportunities.
Contracts
Reads and interprets plans and specifications of proposed work to understand scope of work and contractual obligations.
Systems / Database
Advises and assists V.P./Director of Pre-Construction and Estimating on systems improvements / upgrades that will ensure competitive bids based on meaningful, accurate data.
Assists in database maintenance.
Marketing
Cultivates relationships with competent contractors and vendors to ensure preferred pricing.
Estimating
If applicable for employing company, calls attention of V.P./Director of Pre-Construction and Estimating to significant differences in company estimate and quantities depicted on contract documents.
Conducts occasional pre-bid site visits to document by photographs, video, or other means, unusual site conditions.
Makes basic quantity takeoffs and presents data.
Performs feasibility studies. Recognizes when unconventional methods may be required.
Communicates with company field personnel regarding cost and production history.
Researches files and other sources for information to assist in estimate preparation.
Adheres to company and estimating division procedures.
Researches and develops new methods for improving how we put together cost estimates.
Maximizes profit opportunities.
Communicates to operations how job was bid.
Provides assistance to other Divisions to maximize company opportunities.
Assures that the pricing of external resources is accurate and based on current availability.
Knowledge/Education/Skills/Abilities Required:
Any combination of education and experience providing the required skills and knowledge for the successful performance would be qualifying. Typical qualifications would be equivalent to:
- Completion of the 12th grade, supplemented with a minimum of 5 years construction experience.
- Completion of a minimum of an Associates degree in an Engineering, Construction Management, or Business related field supplemented by a minimum of 3 years construction/estimating experience.
- Completion of a four-year degree in an Engineering, Construction Management or a Business related field supplemented with a minimum of 1 year construction/estimating experience.
Proficiency in estimating software required.
