Brief Description Performs a variety of complex, independent physical and microscopic laboratory tests, analyses, classifications, comparisons and identifications on all types of toolmarks, firearms and ammunition and other types of physical evidence using established protocols. Provides scientific consultation services to submittors and other interested parties. Interprets analytical results and prepares written opinion reports regarding findings. Testifies in legal proceedings regarding testing methods, results and validity of testing protocols. Performs various quality control procedures and is responsible for ensuring the integrity of evidence by using established handling protocols.
Detailed Description Conducts a variety of independent physical and microscopic analyses, classifications, and identifications on all types of toolmarks, firearms, ammunition and other types of physical evidence, including: Prepares metals and other materials for visual and microscopic examination, chemically and physically Utilizes specialized and computerized instrumentation such as stereo and comparison microscopes, automated image capturing system for cartridge cases and bullets, etc. Performs physical and optical analytical procedures using established analytical techniques Reviews analytical results for accuracy and appropriateness performs required calculations Maintains detailed records of all work sufficient to verify that the work product and the conclusion meets established scientific and legal requirements, including quality control requirements and Prepares charge sheets or other materials required to track andor invoice for service provision. Reviews and interprets analytical and instrumental results and produces detailed, written opinion reports of findings and conclusions for use by the submitting agency and other interested parties. Testifies in legal proceedings regarding evidence handling procedures, testing methods, results and validity of testing protocols. Performs quality control procedures and maintains accurate records related to quality control management. Provides scientific consultation services to submittors and other interested parties and offers recommendations for relevant analyses on submitted items. Participates in the proper receipt, storage and tracking of evidentiary materials. Performs general laboratory duties, including oversight of staff and training of new staff. Performs other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements Education and experience equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree in physical sciences, Chemistry, or in a job related field of study. One (1) year of work related experience. Must possess thorough, current knowledge of principles, techniques and procedures of firearms and toolmarks analysis, including the ability to examine and identify firearms for proper functioning, ammunition and ammunition components, microscopic comparison of fired bullets and cartridge cases, range of fire estimations and the ability to examine and compare tools and toolmarks, fracture matches, serial number restorations. Skilled in the use of standard laboratory, firearms and toolmarks examination equipment; thorough knowledge in chemical and biological safe handling procedures; detailed understanding of established evidence handling procedures; and working knowledge of personal computers and standard applications. Ability to communicate in a concise and effective manner; ability to communicate scientific information to lay persons in an understandable manner; ability to work cooperatively with others; and the ability to establish work priorities and work with minimal supervision. Must pass an extensive background investigation. Performs work in a laboratory environment; routinely required to work in areas with potential exposure to biological and/or chemical hazards, particularly lead exposure; required to use good laboratory practices and safety precautions including the use of personal protective equipment. Must possess manual dexterity and visual acuity sufficient to accurately execute standard protocols, including the ability to perceive minute differences and details and to withstand the strain of continued close work. Moderate lifting may be required; frequent and often unanticipated travel within the state of Texas is required.
