Greenhouse Technology Scientist, Environmental Controls (2 Positions)
Location: Morrisville, NC
Contract Length: 12 months W2
Pay rate: $31.25/hour
Objective: Keep all the greenhouses running up to specs for each regulated environment.
Ensure the optimal use of the BASF Plant Growth Facilities in RTP.
Help plan, organize and manage infrastructure and scientific equipment.
Act as technical lead for all plant growth control systems including Argus, Bahnson, Conviron, and EGC.
Reside as consultant and subject matter expert in pest control for all groups and provide expert horticultural/entomological knowledge focusing on using biocontrols.
Lead functional teams to address greenhouse facility issues and troubleshoot processes as they arise.
Proactively identify areas for process improvements Point person for web-based facility information sharing platform.
Act as facility liaison for insect containment greenhouse.
Technical lead for control systems
• Develop programs for user interface and troubleshoot infrastructure with control system.
• Lead weekly meetings with Argus Support and users.
• Train staff as needed.
Maintain greenhouse and seed harvesting equipment.
• Troubleshoot issues with infrastructure and mechanical components of air handlers, harvesting equipment, dust collection equipment, irrigation components, and screen and vent motors.
Subject matter expert in pest control for all groups
• Provide expert horticultural/entomological knowledge focusing on using biocontrols.
• Consult with all pest control teams on site.
• Develop and educate staff in all facilities in RTP to identify insects and employ a robust integrated pest management program.
Assist in forecasting the needs of all greenhouse facilities and help formulate short and long-range goals for the use of each facility.
Develop and maintain web based platform for information storage and sharing for multiple facilities (Sharepoint).
Maintain accurate records of chemical inventory and work with EPA’s WPS laws to train others on chemical safety.
Present written reports and keep accurate records on various greenhouse management parameters to larger groups.
Help draft and maintain SOPs and Work Instructions.
Plan, execute and align greenhouse facility to provide needed services.
Train and lead staff on new policies/protocols or on new equipment related to greenhouse services.

Responds to environmental parameter alarm calls 24-7.
Ensures optimal growth conditions for crops (climate, fertilization, chemical and biological pest control), as aligned with our R&D targets and in full compliance with Safety, Stewardship, Standard Operating Procedures, Biosafety and Quality Assurance procedures on site.
Timely and transparent communication and reporting on future planning, as well as historical records for environmental control conditions, and infrastructure
Identify and solve routine and complex problems independently. Complex problems may involve a team approach, for which this individual is a key contributor.
Provides support and collaborates with many different user groups and stakeholders
Reports to the Team Leader of GOATT (Greenhouse Operations and Technology Team)
Collaborates with other GH Management groups at other BASF greenhouse sites
Leads and is responsible for several initiatives and participates in multiple greenhouse sub teams
Interacts closely with RTP Site Services and with other members from the RTP Operations Team
Interacts closely with Third Party contractors
BS with a minimum of 4 years relevant experience,
Or MS with a minimum of 1 years relevant experience,
Or Non degreed with a minimum of 12 years relevant experience
Organized and self-motivated with strong communication skills.
Proficient in computer skills
Have the ability to prioritize work load and solve problems independently.
