Job Description Summary
The Los Angeles Times is looking for a reporter to focus on health care in Southern California’s communities of color.
COVID-19 has highlighted the severe inequities that exist both in access to health care and the ways economic, environmental and social forces combine to heighten health risks for Black and Latino people. We are looking for a reporter who can drill deep into these communities, exposing the weaknesses in the system, get to the root of the problems and shine a light on the people and institutions that are trying to find solutions.
The beat is meant to be broad in nature, covering both medical and mental health. The successful candidate should be able to balance investigative, narrative and news reporting, with a deep passion for the subject and a willingness to embed to do these stories. A knowledge of data journalism is also a plus.
- A minimum of five years of reporting experience
- Bachelor’s degree or higher, or equivalent experience
- Superior news judgment and knowledge of taste and legal considerations
- An ethical and inclusive approach in the workplace that promotes positive collaboration
- An understanding of the importance of accuracy and precision
This position is listed as Reporter in the Los Angeles Times Guild. Times staff is currently working remotely, but when we return to the newsroom this position will be based in El Segundo, Calif.
As an equal opportunity employer, The Times is always looking to diversify our staff and reflect the communities we cover. Candidates of diverse backgrounds are encouraged to apply – we can’t produce great work without your voice.
Qualified candidates should submit a resume, cover letter and applicable clips to Deputy Managing Shelby Grad.
Please note, the opportunity to attach additional documents appears on the third screen and is labeled “Upload.”
Thank you for your interest in joining our team at the Los Angeles Times! We look forward to reviewing your application.
