About the Job
Job Purpose:
Helps immigrants, refugees, and corporations by providing guidance on immigration, visas, naturalization, and citizenship; assisting refugees and asylum seekers to remain in the Country; defending clients in deportation hearings; helping organizations comply with immigration documentation in the hiring process and comply with fair immigration-related employment practices.
Duties:
* Obtains and retains immigration and naturalization clients by following-up on referrals; understanding immigration and naturalizations laws; presenting legal options; maintaining rapport.
* Provides immigration, naturalization, and citizenship advice by conducting legal research; keeping clients abreast of changing regulations; providing explanations of immigration and naturalization and citizenship requirements.
* Helps refugees obtain asylum by gathering information about the refugee and the conditions in the refugee's home country; assessing the risk of the refugee returning to his or her home country; representing the refugee before immigration authorities.
* Represents aliens in deportation hearings by evaluating the grounds for deportation; developing a defense; representing the alien before immigration authorities.
* Helps Organizations comply with The Immigration and Control Act of 1986 (IRCA) by establishing systems to ensure that Immigration & Naturalization Service-required documents and records are maintained and that hiring practices do not, under the guise of IRCA compliance, lead to discriminatory practices.
* Facilitates non-immigrants to enter countries on a temporary basis by advising clients of appropriate visa application forms.
* Develops immigration and naturalization cases by supervising paralegals; reviewing investigative findings; consulting with experts; preparing documents; appearing before various Immigration and Naturalization agencies.
* Develops immigration and naturalization case preparation by reviewing regulations and precedents; preparing legal briefs; developing strategies, arguments, and testimony.
* Maintains immigration and naturalization case progress by following and enforcing productivity and quality standards; resolving operational problems; identifying work process improvements.
* Resolves immigration and naturalization cases by representing clients before the Immigration and Naturalization Service; filing and defending lawsuits; settling, mediating, or bringing to trial; planning, organizing, and presenting arguments and counter-arguments; engaging expert witnesses; preparing and presenting evidence; preparing and interrogating witnesses.
* Maintains cost standards by monitoring expenses; recommending cost-saving opportunities.
* Improves quality results by studying, evaluating, and re-designing processes; implementing changes.
* Updates job knowledge by tracking immigration and naturalization regulations and case law; participating in educational opportunities; reading professional publications; maintaining personal networks; participating in professional organizations.
* Accomplishes law firm goals by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests; exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments.
