Under general supervision, the International Student Advisor (SSP III) will work as a part of the Student Success Center (SSC) team in the Jack H. Brown College of Business and Public Administration (JHBC), the International Student Advisor (ISA) provides direct services primarily to international students and scholars, and facilitates interaction with faculty, administrators, staff, and off-campus agencies. ISA reports to the Associate Dean of JHBC and works closely with the Center for International Studies and Programs on immigration related issues. ISA independently provides comprehensive advisement to international students and scholars in individual and group settings and needs to exercise sound judgment, interpret available guidelines, policies and precedents to make decisions to resolve problems, and to use conflict resolution and mediation techniques, with understanding of the interrelationships and the need for coordinated action among campus offices and their faculty, staff and other representatives.
The incumbent will interact with persons from a wide range of cultural and ethnic backgrounds and attitudes, and the position requires demonstrated record of working with such audiences and ability to mediate conflict among them. ISA may plan, develop and conduct advising and/or instructional sessions, courses and/or seminars. This position requires considerable administrative planning experience to develop creative solutions which integrate approaches across organizational lines to improve international student advising. The incumbent is responsible for recognizing specific needs of international student, identifying campus services and other resources to be provided; and for developing solutions and recommendations to meet those needs.
Education and Experience
Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field, including or supplemented by upper division or graduate coursework in counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution where such are job-related.
Three years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience. A master's degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a directly related field may be substituted for one year of experience. A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling or guidance may be substituted for the three years of experience.
One year of F1 and J1 immigration advising and DSO working experience.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Thorough knowledge of U.S. government immigration regulations; immigration advising methods, procedures, and practices; and SEVIS
Thorough knowledge of the principles of individual and group behavior and individual counseling techniques to provide advising in individual and group settings on complex matters.
Ability to use judgement to independently analyze and interpret regulations pertaining to F-1 and J-1 students and scholars and ability to develop creative solutions to complex cases
Excellent oral and written communication skills, including intercultural communication, to be able to effectively present ideas in written and presentational formats to diverse audiences
Ability to analyze complex situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action.
Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships across organizational lines.
Demonstrated record of intercultural competency through working or studying in intercultural environment with diverse populations
Experience with USCIS regulations
Experience with SEVIS procedures
Proficiency in language(s) other than English, preferably Arabic or Chinese
Experience maintaining student data and records both in SEVIS and PeopleSoft
Student Service Advising experience in a University setting.
Ability to communicate via Social Media
