Reports to: Chief Clinical Officer (CCO)
FLSA Status: Exempt, Full-time
Supervises: Laboratory Medical Technologist, Lab Technician, and Lab Assistant.
Bachelor's degree in chemical, physical, biological science or medical technology per CLIA guidelines (Standard 493.1405). Current certification by one of the nationally recognized credentialing agencies (ASCP, AMT, ASCL, etc). General laboratory experience of 3 to 5 years encompassing all areas of the lab. At least 1 year of laboratory supervisory experience is preferred, but may be reviewed on a case by case basis by CCO and the current Medical Director or Technical Consultant. Must be able to function effectively in fast-paced environment with multiple demands/deadlines. Thorough knowledge of current accreditation standards for laboratories. Demonstrates good communication skills and strong problem- solving abilities.
For a "moderate complexity" laboratory the Laboratory Manager/Director will be responsible for ensuring the Technical Consultant, Laboratory Director, and Clinical Consultant positions are filled by qualified individuals as required by CLIA and / or COLA.
GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION:
Responsible for overall operation and administration of the laboratory. Positively promote the hospital and its functions within the community. Will ensure that qualified, competent personnel will be employed who meet the CLIA/COLA requirements. Will provide policies and procedures that are current to be available for personnel to use for any tests performed in the lab. Maintains a current charge master with up to date coding and pricing for all laboratory tests. (Hospital employs contracted consultant services for assistance in maintaining the charge master.) Responsible for having appropriate proficiency testing and quality control programs in place for all analytical systems.
Prepares and maintains department budget and prepares proposed budgets. Gathers appropriate information for bids and capital expenditures and provides guidance for the board in making purchase decisions for laboratory equipment. Provides continuing education opportunities for the employees of the department. Must be able to work and cover all areas of the laboratory as this position must fulfill all duties of general MLT/MT job description. Maintains work schedule and leave requests for personnel of lab. Keeps records as required by CLIA. Will disseminate upper management information to laboratory employees as needed, to keep personnel abreast of activities within the hospital environment. Proficient with LIS systems in order to update and maintain distribution of laboratory results to physicians and within hospital.
OTHER NECESSARY SKILLS:
Able to adapt to new situations and have ability to develop new systems for the laboratory. Provides technical expertise for staff when questions or problems arise. May be assigned to committees within the hospital (QA, Safety, etc.) to assist with that particular committee's functions. Maintain positive working relationship with physicians, patients, hospital staff, and my outside entities within our community to develop a cooperative atmosphere within the medical arena. Accepts work assignments as delegated by CCO and exhibits good time management skills. Oversees any incident or statement of concern involving the laboratory, including investigation, follow up, problem resolution, and outcome reporting. Maintains a safe work environment in the laboratory. Monitors supply inventory, orders as necessary, and attends to outdated materials as required by CLIA and / or COLA. Evaluates new tests or technical changes hat may be considered. Provides call coverage and may cover shifts in the laboratory as necessary. Maintains personal laboratory skills.
