DescriptionSHIFT: Days (rotating weekends)
Position Summary: Provide professional consultation with breastfeeding mothers, a positive breastfeeding experience for mother and baby, promote bonding between mother and baby, and promote healthier babies and mothers. Provide consistent breastfeeding and newborn teaching. Provide nursing care for neonates, adolescents, and adults. Demonstrates age specific competencies necessary to deliver safe and effective patient care. Work cooperatively with other disciplines to promote teamwork with Nursery and Special care Nursery staff, physicians, and staff of the maternal/child nursing units, and to assist breast feeding mothers through out the hospital (i.e. Burn Unit, ICU). Assists in the promoting and developing the philosophy of Family Centered maternity care.
Position Goals: Accepts the responsibility and accountability for education of breastfeeding mothers and nursing staff who care for them. Administers direct and indirect quality patient care based on scientific principles and guided by the established policies, protocols, and procedures of Doctors Hospital. Maintains monitors and analyzes the lactation program and prepares statistics, staff education, and reports as required. Essential position accountabilities are as follows: Conducts daily rounds and provides individual counseling to breastfeeding mothers. Performs physical breastfeeding assessments and develops a plan of care with the mother. Revisits mothers who are experiencing problems and gives anticipatory guidance. Documents teaching and progress on patient record. Coordinates/provides home follow-up through phone calls or postcards. Referral to mother support groups and other community resources. Coordinates counseling and support to mother who wish to pride breast milk to their high risk baby. Coordinates dispensing of all breast aids. Provides drop in weight visits for infants not gaining weight or having lactation problems. Works with education department to provide breastfeeding and newborn care classes. Assists in orientation of new employees in lactation process. Resource for patient and staff materials. Resource for staff, physicians, supports group counselors. Develops, reviews, and revises breastfeeding policies, care plans, and patient literature. Functions as a Staff nurse in nursery and postpartum. Attends unit staff meetings, reads minutes and Meditech communications. All other duties as assigned.
Obstetrics: Population Served
- Graduate from an accredited school of nursing with either an AD, Diploma, or BSN degree.
- Current Georgia RN licensure or equivalent eNLC license required upon hire; BLS; NRP required upon hire; IBCLC Certified (Internationally Board Certified Lactation Consultant) preferred, STABLE preferred
- 24 month clinical experience in other/Baby couplet care
