Beautiful, historic, family-oriented community located 30 miles north of Chicago on the shore of Lake Michigan is seeking a progressive, experienced leader in human resources to serve as its next Human Resources Director. Lake Forest is a AAA rated community known for its stunning landscape, excellent schools, and commitment to open space. It is home to more than 1200 businesses, from small boutique shops to corporations including Abbott, Pfizer, the Chicago Bears and many others.
- The Human Resources Director is an integral part of the executive leadership team and is appointed by and reports directly to the City Manager. The Director oversees a department of 2 full-time personnel and a budget of $643,070, manages all employee-related issues and provides support to the City Manager and department heads. The Human Resources Director is a trusted colleague, a resource for all employees and is actively engaged in continuing the City’s high performing, employee oriented organizational culture where the core values are Integrity, Trust, Respect and Excellence. The City has three collective bargaining agreements and works hard at its positive labor relations culture. The Human Resources Director serves as the City’s lead negotiator for all collective bargaining negotiations.
- The Human Resources Director works with employee committees and outside consultants to oversee and manage all employee benefits. The Director also functions as the Secretary to the Board of Fire and Police Commissioners and as a liaison to the City Council’s Personnel, Compensation and Administration Committee.
- The City has an $87 million total budget, which includes a $35 million general fund budget. Lake Forest is a full-service city, including police, fire, public works, water production plant, community development, finance, human resources, parks and recreation, senior center, youth center, cemetery and golf course. The City has 210 full-time employees, 349 seasonal employees, and a strong commitment to fiscal stewardship.
- The City is home to Lake Forest College, a highly regarded private liberal arts college, Lake Forest Graduate School of Management and Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital, a world-class medical institution. It is also home to two symphonies, a thriving theater life, a beautiful lakefront beach, 800 acres of open space and more than 29 miles of trails.
Candidates must be experienced human resources leaders with a commitment to excellence in customer service, employee relations and development, and integrity in local government. They must also possess a management and leadership style that reflects collaboration, teambuilding, accessibility, and a calm, professional demeanor. Experience in labor relations is highly valued. Candidates must possess a bachelor’s degree in business, psychology, political science, public administration, or related fields with some emphasis on human resources management. Five years or more of experience in the human resources field is also essential. Residency is not required.
Starting salary range is $125,000 - $150,000/- DOQ plus eligibility for an annual performance bonus.
