Brief Description Serves as legal support and liaison between the legal advisor, court(s), the District Attorney�sPublic Defender�s Office, and other parties insideoutside the department. Performs and assists with legal research, Civil Service and other third-party administrative hearing preparation, grievance investigation, and discovery. The paralegal also drafts documents, coordinates subpoena and Public Information Request responses, and performs other administrative functions.
Detailed Description Serves as a liaison between the legal advisor and the Courts, District Attorney�sPublic Defender�s Office, defense attorneys, and other parties insideoutside the department. Represents the legal advisor in meetings under the direction of the Legal Advisor. Drafts responses, reports and correspondence. Maintains scheduletrial docket. Prepares trial notebook. Coordinates subpoena responses. Gathers documents, prepares responses to requests for information under the Texas Public Information Act in a timely manner. May testify as a custodian of records regarding documents held by the department. Assists with the preparation of position statements and grievance responses to the Civil Service Commission and other administrative agencies. Interviews witnesses, collects documents, advises persons of the Civil Servicecourt processes, and schedules witnesses for hearings. Drafts questions for examining witnesses. Coordinates appearance of witnesses before the Civil Service Commission and other administrative agencies. Performs legal research and composes memos on legal questions. Assists with and coordinates discovery responses to departmental litigation to ensure that all relevant, requested information is provided to legal counsel and the opposing party. Gathers information in response to requests for production in litigation. Confers with the District Attorney�s Office and outside counsel, and oversees the discovery process in the absence of the legal advisor. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Job Requirements Education and experience equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in a job related field of study. Two (2) years job related experience. Certified Paralegal preferred. Knowledge of on-line legal research services. Must pass criminal background investigation. Ability to sit for prolonged periods and read a computer monitor. Ability to type and answer the telephone for prolonged periods. Must lift items such as case files, file boxes and other items unassisted up to 50 pounds.
