This position is for a senior Design Engineering professional with deep knowledge and highly developed technical expertise. Designs major components, provides technical guidance to junior engineers, and makes recommendations to managements. Presents designs for engineering, technical and business reviews, and coordinates with other functions and organizations. Supports the division wide design engineering organization via design audits, design philosophies, design engineering manual development, training, mentoring and providing concurrent guidance and input throughout all phases of product design. In addition, provides support in developing the technology roadmap and attaining technology development goals. It is the developmental expectation of anyone taking on this position to eventually transition into a Principal Design and Innovation Engineer per an agreed upon development plan.
• Coordinates with other organizations affected by design development to exchange information, ideas and techniques for design of product or processes.
• Designs major components or portions of a functional system, technically-advanced prototypes, and promotional or specific products that develop and improve products and facilitate engineering operations.
• Creates and presents designs in Preliminary Design Reviews (PDR) and Critical Design Reviews (CDR) to ensure effectiveness, viability and quality of designs.
• Trains, instructs, and provides technical guidance to junior engineers to help them diagnose and solve problems and build technical and professional capabilities.
• Resolves design problems and makes recommendations to management to ensure efficiency and effectiveness of design activities.
• Designs major components or major portions of functional systems, technically advanced prototypes, and promotional or specific products using computer design and engineering systems.
• Develops or improves products and facilitates manufacturing operations.
• Develops data and makes layouts, sketches, and notes for design proposals.
• Investigates pertinent design factors such as ease of manufacture, availability of materials and equipment, interchangeability, replace ability, strength-weight efficiency, and contractual specification requirements and cost.
• Designs, develops and tests metallic or non-metallic structures or materials and their related fabrication processes for use in engineering designs.
Design Manuals development & training; Approximately 20%
Supports ownership, development, and maintenance of the Landing Gear Engineering Design Manuals and is responsible for methodical and period review for applicability and required updates ensuring linkage to corrective actions, lessons learned, innovation and technology progression. Also ensures knowledge of and understanding of the manual content by coordinating/ conducting training as necessary.
Internal Design Reviews; Approximately 20%
Attends assigned internal design reviews and ensures that the project requirements are being met by the proposed designs. Understand all material, surface roughness & coating combinations to ensure they have a minimal risk associated with corrosion, and wear (coating and mating part). Understands kinematics and makes sure the most efficient mechanisms are used relative to moment arms.
Investigation, development and management of new technologies; Approximately 20%
Supports the Chief Innovation Engineer relative to the investigation of, development, and management of new technologies. Acts as project lead for selected technology development efforts. Acts as a resource to offer or evaluate new ideas aimed at solving particular challenges or needs as brought forth by the business.
Root Cause Corrective Action (RCCA); Approximately 20%
Required to be an integral team member in all RCCA activity along with other members of the Chief Engineering Office. Aid in problem resolution and actively review/participate in Engineering investigations to ensure robust Root Cause and Corrective Action closure. Aid in the planning and delivery of Engineering Corrective Action Board meetings (scheduling, data reduction, reporting, etc…)
Audits; Approximately 10%
Responsible for coordinating and performance of periodic audits of designers within the project teams to ensure compliance with released standards.
Mentorship; Approximately 10%
Acts as mentor to less experienced designers, including coaching as required. Offer career and training advice to designers on an as requested basis.
Knowledge of stress/fatigue/performance analysis of aerospace products
Proficiency in MS Project as well as MS Office software
Comprehensive knowledge of Aerospace Landing Gear Design, Qualification, analysis techniques and manufacturing methods
Project Management Skills; Excellent verbal, written and presentation skills
Candidates for this role should possess a Bachelor’s degree and 7 years of prior relevant experience or an Advanced degree and 5 years of prior relevant experience
B.S. In Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering or equivalent
Minimum of 7 years’ experience in the design, integration and certification of complex mechanical/hydraulic aerospace systems (i.e.: landing gear designs).
Minimum of 5 years leading complex mechanical/hydraulic systems design programs.
Demonstrated competence in configuration of mechanisms with complex motion.
Knowledge of Composites/Additive Manufacturing/Prognostic Health Monitoring systems an asset.
Minimal Work activities involve alternating positions of light physical activities (sitting, standing, walking, bending, lifting light weight animate/inanimate objects, intermittent periods of keyboarding etc.), which cause little physical effort. Majority of time is spent in a comfortable position with frequent opportunity to move about at will. Activities require a variety of easy muscle movements.
Minimal physical Works in an environment with occasional exposure to mild unpleasant or disagreeable conditions, e.g., negligible conditions of dust, dirt, noxious odors, noise etc. and/or a remote possibility of risk of accident or health hazards.
Considerable Work activities involve a frequent need to concentrate on a variety of sensory inputs for lengthy durations at a time requiring diligence and attention to interpret effectively, e.g., graphic design, analyzing/auditing data/information, software/hardware programming, technical troubleshooting, repairing tools/equipment/instruments that are detailed requiring an exacting need for precision; writing complex reports, intense listening, e.g., when facilitating meetings, conducting interview, crisis intervention. If sensory activities are interrupted, considerable time in backtracking is required to resume activities. The need for detailed or precise work is high.
Considerate Work activities are performed in an environment with frequent exposure to mental pressure conditions where the mental stress would be noticeable, e.g., deadlines that have aspects of conflicting and/or competing pressures, dealings with public or client contacts who are angry, demanding, uncooperative, or emotionally disturbed, concern about dangerous situations occurring is common and or regular disruption of personal life because of work, work schedules or need to travel.
