This is a primary Medical Assistant position assigned to a faculty member in the Otology Division of the Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery. The position will act as primary clinical support for the assigned faculty member when seeing patients in the office. The position will also act as the primary point of reference for established patients of the assigned faculty member for any ongoing inquiries or patient needs. The position will be active at Department offices located at both Norfolk General Hospital as well as Sentara Princess Anne Hospital.

Develop a high level of knowledge and expertise in caring for Otology patients, and use this knowledge to assist assigned physician in caring for and educating patients pre and postoperatively.
Work closely with the clinical receptionists, administrative assistants and surgical scheduler to manage the office and surgical schedules of the assigned Otology faculty member.
Be mindful of physician and patient preferences to coordinate with all parties in a professional and courteous manner.
Work with patients and other physicians to schedule consultations, pre-surgical testing, answering/triaging patient phone calls and post-operative scheduling.
Meet with patients to review surgical information, discuss common concerns or questions that patients contemplating surgery may have, and mail additional information and surgical preparation packets to patients.
Handle multi-task calls from current and prospective patients and family members, other physician offices, surgical scheduling offices and clearly relay relevant information to the assigned physician or others assisting with the patients care.
Will assist assigned physician during clinics. Specific duties during clinic will include – rooming patients, obtaining vital signs, documenting portions of the patients medical history, creating a clinical summary, ordering tests and assisting to fulfill other requests of the supervising physician.
Must maintain a professional and courteous demeanor and helpful attitude while interacting with all patients and physicians offices in order to provide excellent service to all those involved with the Otology Division.
Coordinate coverage and referrals to the Audiology Division as needed for patient care needs.
Performs other duties as assigned.
High school diploma plus successful completion of a Medical Assistant program and certification (RMA or CMA) required. Experience in a high volume clinical practice is preferred.
Must be detail oriented and organized in order to help ensure that all patients information, pre-operative scheduling/clearances and surgical scheduling is completed and maintained in a timely fashion.
