The Medical Director is a board certified physician in the area of her/his field of expertise. S/he provides part-time clinical care to patients. S/he defines, promotes, and reviews quality practices for his/her department and the sites in which providers work. S/he serves as a community representative in her/his specialty. S/he develops processes for ensuring continuity across patient transitions of care.
Essential Functions
- Inform clinical site director on expectations of providers in your specialty; monitor and support providers to improve
- Set standards of care/protocols on the management of common conditions
- Provide evidence-based guidelines and decision support tools to aid providers in care
- Define, promote, monitor productivity standards in specialty
- Inform clinical site directors on expectations of providers in specialty; monitor and support providers to improve
- Oversee and review productivity incentive program in specialty
- Participate and oversee regular chart review of provider peers in specialty
- Define panel size for providers based on their level of license
- Serve as a community representative for Legacy in activities/collaboratives/committees related to specialty
- Represent specialty in the budget process
- Recruit providers into specialty for the organization
- Review data on waiting times for new patients, no show rates, etc. to make decisions on how specialty should grow/expand
- Investigate and propose pilot testing of new initiatives and models of care
- Ensure ongoing educational activities support providers up-to-date care practices
- Collaborations with academicians in specialty
- Phone coverage for emergency calls after hours (only if they cannot be handled by answering service)
- Take call for the Service Line when Team Health needs to speak to a provider
- If appropriate, create an on call rotation for providers in the service line to assist with after-hours coverage
- Partner with operational and care coordination teams to develop strategies that manage patient transitions of care between clinic, hospitals, emergency rooms, and specialty care
- Serve as link between EHRS/IT team at the local level and with our vendors to ensure that specialty related content is up to date and relevant and that providers use of the system is optimized
- Serve as link with specialty specific educational and training programs to establish and strengthen opportunities for teaching at our sites within department
- Provide input to clinical site directors and operational site directors on improving strategies in specialty specific processes such as scheduling, phone triage, and clinic workflows
- Work with Grants team to identify opportunities and assist with implementation of new projects
- Work with Billing department on best practices to optimize compliance and revenue in the department
- Advise on major medical equipment purchases related to department
- Work with Marketing and Community relations team to ensure specialty specific outreach is done to increase visibility in community, increase patient traffic as well as promote clinically relevant messages
- Work with other service line directors to establish and support a collaborative interdisciplinary model of care
- Prepare department for clinical audits and ensure that clinical practice is aligned with audit requirements
- Provide part-time clinical care in specialty area
- Other duties as assigned
EDUCATION & TRAINING REQUIREMENTS:
- Graduate from an accredited medical school as M.D., D.O.
- Seasoned physician with a minimum of 5 years in practice
- Credentialed and privileged according to Legacys standards and practices
WORK EXPERIENCE:
- At least 5 years of practice experience
- At least 2 years of management experience
