The Medical Dosimetrist must design, develop, and implement radiation treatment plans through the use of computer and/or manual computations to deliver prescribed radiation dose and field placement technique in accordance with the radiation oncologist's prescription.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
Performing calculations for the accurate delivery of the radiation oncologists' prescribed dose to defined tumor volume and dose constraints to normal tissues/organs
Documenting all pertinent information in the patient's record
Required to verify the mathematical accuracy of all calculations using established guidelines
Preparing organ and tissue contours used for treatment planning of patients
Coordinating treatment simulations and tumor localizations on dedicated devices (e.g., CT, MRI, X-Ray, and PET, etc.) when indicated, for radiation treatment planning.
Performing basic physics and technical support in the areas of radiation protection, qualitative machine calibrations and quality assurance of the radiation oncology equipment
Required to maintain currency on new treatment planning techniques, devices and methods through regular participation in continuing education activities
Minimum Education: Specialized/technical training
Minimum Experience: 1 years
Minimum Field of Expertise: One year of clinical experience. Working knowledge of radiation therapy planning systems (e.g., Varian Eclipse). Demonstrated understanding of radiation and current rules and regulations of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Excellent organizational, written and oral communication skills.
