Under general supervision and according to established policies and procedures, performs standardized clinical laboratory tests in one or more sections of laboratory medicine in order to obtain data for use in diagnosis and treatment of disease. Analyzes and interprets test results, and ensures accuracy of same. Repeats tests as necessary, especially those yielding abnormal or atypical results and notifies appropriate personnel of such results in a timely manner. Minimum knowledge, skills and abilities required: 1. Knowledge of chemistry, biology, mathematics, hematology, microbiology and serology at a level normally acquired through completion of an Associate's degree in Medical Laboratory Technology. Registered or registry eligible by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) /National Credentialing Agency (NCA). Approximately 6-12 months on-the-job experience necessary in order to gain knowledge of testing procedures, become familiar with Hospital laboratory equipment and systems, as well a attain proficiency in performing laboratory procedures. Interpersonal skills necessary to communicate effectively with physicians and other providers, nursing personnel and coworkers when reporting lab findings, explaining test results, gathering information and the like. Analytical skills necessary to interpret and analyze test results and determine appropriate course of action for abnormal or atypical results. Ability to concentrate and pay close attention to detail for up to 70% of work time in order to closely examine specimens and distinguish fine gradations of color. Ability to maintain composure and calm during stressful, urgent situations. American Heart Association BLS certification required within 60 days of start date and renewed every 2 years. Ability to provide care for patients in the following age groups: Infant - Birth to 1 year; Child – 2 to 12 years; Adolescent – 13 to 18 years; Adult – 19 to 65 years; Geriatric – over 65 years.
