Under the direction of the Medical Laboratory Director, pathologist, and/or Administrative Laboratory Director processes and prepares patient specimens for send out to histology laboratory for routine and special staining procedures. Assist during frozen sections as needed. Accessions pathology specimens and testing requests into Cerner.Ensures that pathology supplies are ordered when needed and inventory is monitored.Maintains grossing room and continually prepares the area for grossing.Responsible for specimen and hazardous material storage and disposal in accordance with regulatory guidelines.Assists with maintenance and care of instruments and devices.Provides pathology department support functions including filing and retrieval of specimens or reports. Transcribes medical reports, routine letters and other medical correspondence using transcription equipment and word processing programs. Prepares material for consultation to other facilities. Assists the Medical Laboratory Director, pathologist, and/or Administrative Laboratory Director with other duties as assigned.
Possesses knowledge of basic anatomy. Able to retrieve, log and set up specimens for pathological and cytological examination. Possess a tolerance for processing and disposal of human pathological specimens. Recognizes safety aspects of handling hazardous materials to include formalin and alcohols.Possesses basic knowledge of operation and maintenance of centrifuges, cryostat, knife sharpener and other equipment associated with a pathology laboratory. Possesses ability for rapid and accurate transcription of tape recorded anatomical pathology dictation. Must have a good working knowledge of medical terminology utilized in pathology consultations. Good working knowledge of basic office equipment to include telephone, fax machines and personal computers. Good communication skills in English.
Two years previous experience in pathology laboratory environment and pathology medical transcription preferred.
High school diploma or equivalent.
