Maternal Fetal Medicine
Akron Children’s Hospital is seeking a Board Certified/Board Eligible Perinatologist to join its Department of Maternal Fetal Medicine. The department currently has four perinatologists including one trained in Medical Genetics, a Maternal Fetal Clinical Nurse Specialist and a Women’s Health Clinical Nurse Practitioner. We provide specialty high risk obstetrical care with advanced prenatal assessment and treatment including targeted ultrasonography, genetic counseling, amniocentesis, chorionic villus sampling, fetal echocardiology, fetal MRI, cordocentesis, in utero transfusion. Our model of care is mainly consultative and co-management with total care provided to select highest risk patients.
We have an active regional transport program and perform approximately 100 deliveries annually at two local adult hospitals. A specially equipped ambulance and pediatric transport team handles the transfer of the newborns requiring the Level III neonatal intensive care provided at Akron Children’s. Both adult hospitals have Level III OB and neonatal designation and medical school affiliated OB/GYN residency programs and we actively participate in the education of residents and medical students. Medical school appointment is required. Research opportunities are also available and encouraged.
The Department of MFM is home to the D. Gary Benfield Fetal Treatment Center which provides care to patients with fetal complications and has a program coordinator/genetic counselor, nurse case manager, and genetic counselors. Akron Children’s Hospital is home to the 59 bed regional neonatal intensive care unit with 8 neonatologists and has a full complement of medical and surgical pediatric subspecialists including a highly developed pediatric cardiac surgery program.
