Major duties and responsibilities include:
- Performs psychiatric evaluations for a diverse population,including geriatric and post deployment combat Veterans, who arementally ill and have psychosocial issues such as homelessness,unemployment, and poor family support network.
- Provides a full range of therapeutic interventions includingdiagnostic assessment, medication evaluation and management,suicide risk assessments, crisis intervention, and overall careof patients with psychiatric disorders.
- Ensures practice of psychiatric medicine is consistent with TJC,CARF, HIPPA, VA policies and procedures, clinical practiceguidelines, national statutes and regulations, medical recorddocumentation, and mandatory continuing education.
- Provides a full range of psycho-diagnostic services includingassessment and the most appropriate psychotherapeutic techniquesin providing quality care.
- The Psychiatrist may serve as a mental health team leader withresponsibilities for coordinating consults and triage ofspecialty clinic referrals.
- Participates effectively in team meetings and treatment planningconferences, and collaborates with multidisciplinary teammembers that enhances coordination of comprehensive patientcare.
- Orders diagnostic tests and consultations, and discriminatesbetween normal and abnormal findings and makes appropriatetreatment decisions.
- May participate in supervision and teaching in support of thepsychiatric residency program, performs on call duties, andperforms other directly related duties as assigned.
- Areas which the psychiatrist is assigned and has clinicalprivileges to practice may include depression, anxiety,psychosis, PTSD, substance abuse, and other psychiatricdisorders in various clinical settings (outpatient, inpatient,ED).

The individual must qualify to perform duties as a physician, havecompleted an accredited residency and/or possess experience whichhas qualified the individual to perform general duties and somespecialized functions and procedures without supervision. Staffphysicians may also include attendings who train physician residentsassigned in facilities with residency training programs, andconsultants who are capable of giving authoritative views andopinions on subjects in their field of medicine.
The Incumbent is an independent care provided who is highly skilledin the management of a patient's mental health needs or subspecialtyevaluation and treatment; conducts history, physical exams andmental status exams on assigned patients; completes intakeassessments and formulates diagnosis. Develops and presentstreatment plans to the multidisciplinary treatment team. Order allnecessary laboratory and radiological assessments; initiatesconsults and referrals as indicated. Psychotherapy andpharmacotherapy as indicated in the treatment plan. Maintainseffective and up-to-date documentation of patient encounters andperforms psychiatry on-call duties as assigned. Incumbentparticipates in professional and administrative activities asassigned. Admits, evaluates, diagnoses, treats and providesconsultation to patients of all ages except as specifically excludedfrom practice: presenting with mental, behavioral, addictive oremotional disorders, e.g. psychoses, depression, anxiety disordersincluding but not limited to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder,substance abuse disorders, developmental disabilities, Sexualdysfunctions, and adjustment disorders.
Basic Requirements:- United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointedwhen it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens inaccordance with VA Policy.- Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resultingfrom a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine.The degree must have been obtained from one of the schoolsapproved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year inwhich the course of study was completed.- Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine orsurgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the UnitedStates, or in the District of Columbia.- Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved bythe Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited corespecialty training program leading to eligibility for boardcertification.- Proficiency in spoken and written English.- Preferred: Board Certified or Board Eligible Psychiatrist
