The Respiratory Therapist helps patients who experience difficultybreathing, learn to use various equipment and techniques to aid in clearer andmore efficient breathing. The Respiratory Therapist is assigned to work in thePulmonary Function Laboratory to perform Pulmonary Function Testing as well as providing treatments and proceduresto patients in the lab and bronchiectasis program.
Demonstrate the ability, understanding andproper utilization of the following: nasal cannula, venti mask, USN,non-Rebreather masks, changing regulators, pulse oximetry etc.
Demonstrate competency to perform thefollowing pulmonary function testing procedures: spirometry, lung volumes,diffusing capacity, fraction of exhaled nitric oxide testing, impulseoscillometry, simple pulmonary stress test, cardiopulmonary exercise stresstest (CPET), methacholine challenge test (MCT) sputum induction, arterial bloodgas, maximum inspiratory and expiratory pressure, maximum voluntaryventilation, and other tests as assigned.
Perform daily calibration of all pulmonaryfunction equipment as required.
Act as biological control for pulmonaryfunction equipment.
Demonstrate the ability to performpreventative monthly maintenance and trouble shoot equipment.
Demonstrate clinical competency in evaluation,analysis, and interpretation of data obtained from diagnostic and physiologictests.
Demonstrate competency in performance criteriaof Medication and Medical Gas Administration: Proper use of metered doseinhalers, peak flow meters, Oxygen, Nitric Oxide etc.
Demonstrate competency in performance criteriaof handling medical gas cylinders.
Demonstrate the ability to administerbronchodilators and educate patient on the usage of metered dose inhalers andother medication delivery devices.
Demonstrate competency in use of electronicmedical record – documentation, order sets, etc.
Act as a liaison to facilitate training ofstaff and the development of testing protocols.
Perform inventory check.
Demonstrate the ability to be involved inresearch studies involving performing pulmonary function testing.
Communicate with scheduler and other personnelto facilitate in-patient testing and clarification of clinical aspects oftesting.
Confirm testing instructions e.g. CPETs andMCT for adequate patient preparation.
Adhere to department’s policies andprocedures.
Maintain cleanliness and safe workenvironment.
Perform other related duties.
Demonstrate clinical competency performance inETT placement and securing airway. Suctioning ETT, including closed systemsuctioning, open system with sterile technique.
Demonstrate Ventilator and BiPAP/CPAP setupand management.Demonstrate proficiency in bedside testing forweaning (spirometery), use of End Tidal CO2 and Peak Flow meters.
NYS Respiratory Therapist with Associate’s degree in a Respiratory Therapy program with AHA BLS. Bachelor’s degree and exp in Pulmonary Function lab highly desired.
