May Institute is seeking interested and motivated students to assist with applied research under the supervision of Dr. Cynthia Anderson, a psychologist at May Institute. Research in the Center for Applied Research at May Institute uses behavioral methods (i.e., applied behavior analysis) to better understand effective interventions for people with autism.
Current projects that research assistants may be involved with include understanding effective interventions for problem behavior such as aggression, developing interventions for repetitive behaviors that interfere with daily life, such as intense rituals or frequent and loud vocalizations, and reviewing the literature to identify best practices.
Students may volunteer as research assistant or, if an option with their college or university, may receive course credit from the university. Research assistants may be in the lab for up to 10 hours per week and will attend weekly research lab meetings where lab projects and other relevant research will be discussed. Research assistants will have the opportunity to learn about a variety of research topics in psychology and applied behavior analysis as relevant to supporting people with autism and other disabilities. Research assistants will have the opportunity to focus on one project in an in-depth manner or work across several projects. Research assistants may participate in collecting data during treatment sessions, coding data, interacting with people with autism, and working on other specific research tasks.
- Currently enrolled in a bachelors degree program focused on education, psychology, public health, or related fields.
- Availability to work 8-10 hours a week
