Research Associate II - Imaging
As a successful candidate for this Research Associate II role, you will join a team conducting cutting-edge image-based transcriptomics experiments in a high-throughput production environment. Our team uses multiple microscopy systems and analysis pipelines to measure single-cell gene expression in the brain and the you will perform experiment setup, learn about automated imaging software and supervising image analysis tasks on acquired data. Your work will require a diligent attitude, attention to detail and an interest in collaborative science. In addition to day-to-day production operations, you will also fulfill quality control and support functions within the team. Your scientific problem-solving skills, instrument troubleshooting and quantitative analysis will be required for keeping our pipeline running smoothly, generating foundational data to advance neuroscience research across the globe.
The Research Associate II position is responsible for executing a variety of laboratory tasks and/or experiments in a high-throughput laboratory environment following Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). Good judgment and problem solving skills are required for recognizing process deviations, participating in troubleshooting, and operation of complex laboratory instrumentation. The Research Associate is expected to comply with regulatory requirements, adhere to SOPs and to work efficiently in a team environment. Excellent manual dexterity, attention to detail and the willingness to work in a team based deadline-driven atmosphere is mandatory. This position is a career development position and requires moderate skill sets and developing proficiency within the discipline.
- Operate and assist in the development of platforms for multiplexed fluorescence in situ hybridization microscopy
- Perform image analysis tasks on acquired microscopy data in ImageJ, Python, or other languages or computer programs
- Operate multiple imaging instruments (brightfield, epi-fluorescence and one-photon laser scanning microscopes) with an emphasis on brightfield and widefield fluorescence microscopy
- Evaluate and communicate research results to internal stakeholders
- Perform routine laboratory work, including specimen and slide preparation
- Follow Standard Operating Procedures, good laboratory practices, and comply with all regulatory requirements
- Evaluate, calibrate and troubleshoot experiment quality and instrument functionality
- Maintain accurate laboratory documentation using established methods, which may include Microsoft Office, Microsoft Access, custom Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS), Atlassian JIRA and others
- Contribute to and audit SOPs, as requested by departmental Manager/Director. Assist and train other staff as necessary
- Contribute to a rigorously scientific, cohesive and efficient team environment
- Other duties as assigned
Education and Experience
- Bachelor�s degree (BA or BS) from four-year College or University in a scientific field
- Minimum of 2 years of research or clinical laboratory experience
- Minimum 2 years' experience using scientific instrument control software
- Experience with Python for scientific computing
- Intermediate level ability with MS Office, including PowerPoint or equivalent for scientific presentations.
Preferred Job Qualifications
- 2-4 years of laboratory experience
- Demonstrated experience in quantitative image analysis.
- Strong scientific communication skills (written and oral)
- Image processing experience in Python
- Instrument control programming experience
Work Environment & Physical Demands
- Ability to work within a busy core facility with tight deadlines
- Work may be performed in cramped or awkward positions
- Occasional exposure to safety hazards, noises, change in temperature, climbing and/or lifting, chemicals, and other hazardous materials and machinery
- Exposure to Class IV lasers
- Must be able to resolve red/green colors
- May be required to work alternate hours (i.e., Saturday or Sunday shift)
