Under direct supervision of Research & Development Manager the incumbent will develop personal care products designed for people of African descent. Responsibilities are to develop test methods, manufacturing methods and production requirements.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The incumbent is responsible for preparation for alternate raw materials in compounding formulations. Prepare alternate raw chemical sample size batch(s). Monitor the compounding process for control and alternate raw chemical samples. Conduct stability test on control and alternate raw chemical samples. Complete work request supporting salon test, monitor salon testing, evaluate all salon-testing results by sample(s), and present salon testing results to Project Coordinator. Trouble shoot production batches by rework and record sample rework results and correction procedures. Ensure daily cleanliness in the lab, work areas are cleaned, equipment in proper working condition. Lab equipment must be used properly, calibrate analytical lab equipment and recommend lab equipment. Recommends to Director of R&D any changes, upgrade or additions needed in QC lab. Organize the R&D storage area supplier samples, literature and reference materials. Ensure that sufficient quantities of supplier sample chemical raw materials are on-hand supporting formulation projects. Provide project status report: executive summary, salon test results, statistical analysis on results, observations regarding stability, and any significant findings/conclusions or recommendations with regard to projects. Lab notebook: record formulation activity, detail of ingredients, ingredients percentages, sample must be coded, specifications analysis observations about appearance of samples, and must record all test samples observations regarding stability. Making new products and improving old products.
Ability to handle multiple tasks, projects and see them through to completion by assigned deadlines. Experience with coordinating multiple skill projects. Must be able to set realistic goals for self and subordinates. Must have excellent communication skills both oral and written. Must be able to work well with others, and be dependable and flexible. Must be able to write and read daily logs.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry or related field. Must have two years experience with ethnic hair care products.
Must be able to work well with others to ensure that projects are organized and needs and concerns are addressed. Profile should indicate abilities and tendencies toward flexibility and dependability. Must have excellent problem solving abilities. Most have concrete math skills for assigned projects. Must be able to read, write and speak English.
Should be very good at identifying and solving problems to the satisfaction of those involved. Should be able to turn verbal instructions into plans for implementation and stay on task for long range plans. Must have ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but involved written or oral instructions and make independent decisions when circumstances warrant.

Research and Development Chemist
