The Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology serves as a regional resource for clinical laboratory services required for patient care, research and educational programs in laboratory medicine and pathology. The Department of Pathology has an outstanding opportunity for a full-time Research Scientist/Engineer 3. The Heart Regeneration Program, a translational program within UW Medicine, is developing human embryonic stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes as a cell therapeutic. Under the general guidance of Senior Scientists, this position will require to work independently to reach established milestones and goals. This position will also be expected to work collaboratively with fellow research personnel, and redirect efforts to achieve task/project objectives or enhance the quality of the project when necessary. The typical job functions for this position will include: • Cell culture responsibilities: -Aseptic and sterile work techniques -Expansion and maintenance of undifferentiated cell lines -Banking of undifferentiated human pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs) -Performing quality control assays for undifferentiated cell banks (karyotyping, mycoplasma testing, etc.) -Clonal isolation, expansion and banking of edited cell lines -Differentiation of human pluripotent stem cells towards various cardiovascular lineages (i.e. cardiomyocytes, epicardial cells, endothelial cells, smooth muscle cells) -Large scale banking of cardiomyocytes derived from hPSCs -Transfection of cultured cells • Perform molecular procedures such as DNA cloning and editing, plasmid preparations, and the isolation of DNA, RNA, and protein from cells and tissues; • Perform molecular analyses such as RT-PCR, western blotting, immunocytochemistry, and flow cytometry; • Assist with laboratory operations including ordering, regulatory compliance, and other key support as needed; • Prepare and maintain accurate protocols; • Assist in general lab maintenance; • Manage projects of moderate size and scope; • Perform tasks/projects within a larger scope, but lead specific tasks within the project's goals; • Develop protocols for tasks relevant to hers/his project; • Take responsibility for assuring quality, cost effectiveness and timeliness for specific projects; • Create, monitor, and implement effective plans; • Take lead in project/tasks improvements; • Contribute data towards lab's grants, publications, and presentations; • Provide ideas to improve efficiency at group level; • Mentor trainees and junior staff in development of technical skills; • Attend meetings as required; • Other duties as assigned.
