Job Description
The Center for Environmental Systems (CES) at Stevens Institute of Technology invites nominations and applications for research scientist positions in the field of Environmental Engineering/Sustainability/Microbiology and related fields. Reporting to the project principal investigators, the research scientist will be responsible for conducting research in nutrient recovery and biomass generation from industrial waste streams using biological and physicochemical methods.
CES, established in 1989, is a nationally and internationally recognized resource of environmental science, technology, and management promoting environmental R&D, education, and state-of-the-art technology that create innovative solutions for society’s needs within the framework of environmental compatibility and sustainability. CES is dedicated to basic and application-motivated inter- and multi-disciplinary research aimed at creating basic scientific knowledge, advanced technology, and innovative management practices that lead to novel solutions for a sustainable utilization of our environmental resources. CES operates state of the art research laboratories and testing facilities with multimedia capabilities for wastewater, liquid waste, solid waste, and air studies.
The successful candidates will have the demonstrated ability to conduct environmental science and engineering research. They will interact with other faculty and researchers in the Center and the department of Civil Environmental and Ocean Engineering at Stevens.
The successful candidates will have a high level of knowledge in fluid mechanics and mass transfer of environmental systems and demonstrated ability in the development of environmental technology in the area of design for biomass growth for production of renewable energy and nutrient recovery and reuse. Working experience in environmental, chemical, mechanical engineering or related fields is highly desirable. The candidate must have excellent written and oral communication skills and ability to lead and manage masters and undergraduate students. A Ph.D degree or equivalent is required. Specifically, responsibilities include:
- US Citizenship REQUIRED
- Performance of experimental work in the areas of biological/physicochemical nutrient recovery including nitrogen from munitions production plants, redox transformations of nutrients, surface modification for sorption/desorption of ionic species from industrial effluents, and denitrification processes.
- Experimental data analysis and project reporting.
- Journal article preparation and submission, and project findings presentations at national and international conferences.
- Laboratory supervision and experimental research, guidance of graduate students.
