Monitoring of restoration site field conditions, analyzing data from the field, report writing, coordinating and preparing environmental review/ecosystem restoration documents, providing assisted consultation to internal and external clients, preparing proposals, and additional duties as assigned.
The ideal restoration ecologist candidate would assist with day-to-day projects at the direction of the Michael Baker Natural Resources Manager. Some days will be in the office and others may be in the field (usually within two hours from Santa Ana, CA). The successful candidate would be part of a team that provides assistance on a variety of projects associated with habitat restoration, regulatory permitting, land development (e.g., residential, commercial), public works (e.g., flood control, transportation, water resource), and other projects. In addition to being supervised by the Michael Baker Natural Resources Manager, the candidate may work with other in-house professionals such as regulatory specialists, environmental planners, GIS analysts, landscape architects, engineers, and hydrologists.
Typical tasks may include, but not be limited to:Local surveys and fieldwork data collectionPreparation of Habitat Mitigation and Monitoring PlansVegetation monitoringFunction assessmentsClient interaction and proposal writingTechnical writingConstruction monitoringStream/wetland mapping and preparation of regulatory agency permit applicationsSpreadsheet compilationTechnical research and report writing (e.g., mitigation plans, memos, wetland and biological reports)Participate in business development by keeping resume current and looking for possible leads for new work in preparation of proposals.
QUALIFICATIONSBachelor's degree in Biology, Zoology, Botany, Ecology, Natural Resource Management, or other related field is required2 years of experience with biological services-oriented work including involvement and proficiency with regulatory compliance and permitting such as CEQA/NEPA, ESA and CWA, for a variety of development, restoration, and mitigation projects Experience and/or ability to recognize opportunity for market expansion and client retention as well as experience in managing and building a team of professionals is requiredExcellent written and verbal communication skills, along with the ability to develop technical sections and coordinate and manage preparation for environmental assessments, management plans, and other environmental studies and documents is requiredStrong background in terrestrial ecology to perform biological resource evaluations, develop habitat restoration, and management programs is requiredStrong computer user skills using the Microsoft Office Suite is requiredConduct monitoring for construction/restoration projects
