PURPOSE OF YOUR JOB DESCRIPTION:
A Registered professional nurse is responsible for delivery of patient care to an obstetrical and newborn population through the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation. Also directs and guides patient teaching, activities of ancillary personnel while maintaining standards of professional nursing.
DELEGATION OF AUTHORITY:
Reports to Nurse Manager and Nursing Supervisor.

PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENT / DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
ASSESSES PHYSICAL, PSYCHOLOGICAL, AND SOCIAL DINEMSIONS OF THE PATIENT: Applies knowledge of illnesses, injuries, and diseases and uses available resources in assessment process.
Provides written assessment of patient on admission documents nursing intervention, patient response, effectiveness, and complications and summarizes information on discharge.
Summarizes assessment data and makes a nursing care plan which is written and communicated to other patient care providers.
IMPLEMENTS PLAN OF CARE: Implements clinical and technical aspects of care and nursing orders in accordance with established policies and procedures.
Intervenes with proper technique, procedure, and safety precautions to meet individual needs of patient.
Functions within the limits of State Nurse Practice Act, hospital and nursing department policies and procedures.
PATIENT AND FAMILY INSTRUCTION/EDUCATION AND DISCHARGE PLANNING: Assesses, plans, and implements instruction for patient and family needs, for patient and family with an emphasis on newborn care and home needs or alternatives such as outpatient treatment or home visits.
PROFESSIONAL LEADERSHIP and CHARGE RESPONSIBILITIES: Reports patient care or management problems to Nurse Manager and/or supervisor when necessary and investigates and intervenes in problem situations reporting appropriate information.
Makes outpatient assignment based on acuity and staff qualifications and experience. Supervises RN's/LPN's assigned on your shift.
Coordinates patient scheduling, unit routines, providing guidance to staff, orienting new staff, assuring presence and working order of emergency equipment.
UNIT REQUIREMENTS: Labor and Delivery Demonstrates the ability to support patients and families through the labor process, and the ability to interpret fetal monitors and take any necessary action.
Demonstrates the ability to assess the laboring patient, post-partum mother, newborns and respond to complications.
Demonstrates a working knowledge and safe use of medications specific to patients in labor.
Demonstrates the ability to circulate the delivery room.
Recognizes and understands the principles of surgical asepsis.
UNIT REQUIREMENTS: Obstetrics/Nursery Demonstrates the ability to assess newborns and respond to complications.
Demonstrates the ability to assess the post-partum mother and respond to complications.
Demonstrates the ability to provide patient and family teaching to ensure the family is well prepared for discharge.
Demonstrates the ability to safely use and troubleshoot equipment specific to OBS.
PERSONAL GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT: Identifies own learning needs and seeks opportunities for self growth, using and sharing skills gained through continuing education classes.
Has completed annual nursing competencies.
Has attended annual mandatory day.
AGE SPECIFIC COMPETENCY: Evaluates for age-appropriate behavior, motor skills, and physiological norms of patients, recognizing a patient's psychological development and modifies approaches for patients.
Interview and communication techniques are age-appropriate.
GENERAL REQUIREMENTS: Respects others.

Works within legal, regulatory and ethical practice standards.
Meets attendance and punctuality standards. Demonstrates reliability and accountability.
Maintains cooperative working relationships with the nurses, physicians and other health care staff, agencies and facilities.
Is professional in appearance appropriate to role and environment.
• Graduate of accredited School of Nursing
• Currently licensed as a Registered Nurse in Massachusetts
• Successful completion of an Advanced Fetal Monitoring course
• Basic Life Support
• One year Labor and Delivery and post-partum nursery experience required
