|Performs Therapeutic and Donor Apheresis procedures such as Plasma Apheresis, Red Cell Exchange, Stem Cell Collections and other related procedures as required. Assesses patient needs in the Therapeutic Apheresis program. Plans, organizes, performs, and evaluates nursing activities that meet those needs. Meets the qualifications to provide care for patients in the specific age range on their assigned clinic or nursing unit.|
Performs duties to provide the highest level of patient care and maximize patient satisfaction.
Works under the general supervision of the Technical Specialist and under the administrative direction of the Supervisor or Lab Operations Director.
Performs duties to support the goals and objectives of the Geisinger Health System in its efforts to provide quality patient care and patient satisfaction.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
|*1. Performs initial and ongoing patient assessment appropriate for the procedure being performed.|
*2. Helps the patient adjust to the Apheresis Clinic. Provides health teaching and updates
such as changes in patient status or technology requires.
*3. Assembles necessary equipment and administers apheresis to patients.
*4. Demonstrates ability to properly operate apheresis and donor equipment.
*5. Observes reports, interprets, and records manifestations of the patient's condition during procedures.
*6. Administers medications and blood products as appropriate and required for the specific procedure
*7. Manages adverse reactions to procedures and transfusions
*8. Participates and coordinates in health teaching to prepare the patient and family for post procedure care and future appointment preparation.
*9. Documents observations, activities, and updates computer information as necessary.
*10. Assists in the evaluation of the quality of patient care and participates in quality improvement activities.
*11. Functions as preceptor/trainer as assigned.
*12. Contributes to unit committee activities.
*13. Maintains good communications and positive interpersonal relationships.
*14. Follows departmental and hospital policies in the delivery of patient care.
*15. Safeguards the patient from hazards and injuries.
*16. Performs work at primary facility and assists at other facilities based on workload.
*17. Participates in an on-call schedule. (including work at other facilities per #16 above)
*18. Performs appropriate clinical duties as required.
*19. Assists in performing appropriate technical duties as required (see MLT and TLA job descriptions).
*20. Must wear appropriate personal protective equipment when risk of exposure to
patient's blood or other bodily fluids exists.

Must possess solid interpersonal, communication (verbal and written), organizational, and critical thinking skills.
Must be able to work independently and manage all aspects of the applicable apheresis procedure(s), while adhering to the unit policies and procedures, as well as regulatory requirements (e.g. FDA, FACT).
Must be able to work collaboratively with other apheresis staff (e.g. RN’s, apheresis technicians) to effectively manage daily workflow and be able to adapt to unpredictable situations within the work setting.
Must be willing to accommodate scheduling changes, as well as off-shift weekend assignments, as workload dictates.
Knowledge of adult and pediatric apheresis/dialysis preferred
Excellent venipuncture skills
Demonstrates good organizational skills and effective communication skills.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
|Current Registered Nurse licensure in Pennsylvania or eligibility for licensure required.|
Graduated from an approved school of nursing required.
BLS certification required.
Requires on-the-job training to become familiar with all job duties.
