Under general supervision, responsible for major traffic engineering function related to the design, selection and/or placement of traffic structures and appurtenances.
Examples of Duties
Plans and supervises the work of moderately large group of subordinate engineers and drafting technicians engaged in performing fundamental traffic engineering design studies and analysis of transportation problems related to the design, selection and/or placement of traffic structures and appurtenances.
Prepares plans and policies for performing the work.
Assigns, reviews and approves the work of subordinates.
Advises and provides instruction on the more difficult phases of the work.
Trains subordinates and new staff members.
Evaluates existing statistical traffic data and arranges for the collection of pertinent information in order to develop solutions to traffic control and design problems.
Formulates specific solutions to traffic problems and evaluates the effectiveness of actions taken as a result of those recommendations.
Prepares and modifies, from a traffic engineering perspective, plans and layouts related to the design of traffic structures and appurtenances.
Investigates and prepares reports on the more difficult and specialized phases of traffic design and control activities.
Consults with representative of other city departments, public private utilities and other traffic agencies.
Represents the department in the coordination of efforts and responsibilities in major traffic engineering projects.
Bachelor's degree in traffic engineering or related field of study.
Three years of experience in traffic and related engineering activities which has involved making transportation studies in urban areas and design of traffic and transportation structures including two years which has been in a supervisory capacity.
Statistical Methods as applied to traffic engineering problems.
Principles and practices governing the design of traffic structures from traffic engineering perspective.
Problems in urban transportation and the methods involved in their study and solution.
Standards and practices of traffic engineering.
Oral and written communication.
Use of standard engineering and specialized traffic engineering application software.
Analyzing problems related to traffic engineering design and structures.
Planning and supervising the work of a moderately large group of engineers and drafting technicians.
Tactful interaction working with subordinates, representatives of public and private agencies and the general public.
Prepare technical and popular reports in textual and graphic form.
Analyze traffic and related engineering and statistical data and preparing technical papers and reports thereon.
Display initiative resourcefulness in resolving difficult or complex traffic engineering problems.
License, Certification AND OTHER SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Employees in this class may be required to provide their own automobile for transportation on a reimbursed mileage basis. Valid State of Michigan Driver License.
Registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of Michigan required.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: Work is performed in a variety of shop, plant, field and office locations, sometimes involves exposure to seasonal weather conditions.

City Employees Retirement System
As a regular City employee you automatically become a member of the General Retirement System. This entitles you to a retirement allowance after:
Completion of thirty (30) years of service; - At age sixty (60) if you have at least ten (10) years of service, or - At age sixty-five (65) with eight (8) years of service. (In the event of disability, other eligibility rules apply); An early, actuarially reduced, retirement is offered after you have attained at least twenty-five (25) years of service; Employees are vested after ten (10) years of service, regardless of age.
