Understanding the intent of the query is fundamental to the success of the whole experience that the user sees (e.g. when a user searches for apple, do they mean the fruit or the company?). For a query, maybe the user just wants an immediate answer. Maybe this answer should contain an image/video or be simply an image/video. Maybe this answer should be composed from disparate content types from the web. Maybe there are multiple correct answers or no correct answer at all. We are looking for a strong and enthusiastic Applied Scientist to help us make it real and create the next generation of Bing Multimedia (think image & video) search experiences. Over the last few years the Bing multimedia (MM) team has been the biggest contributor to query share growth for Bing. Our team owns all components of the stack end-to-end for multimedia search; such as image/video serving with rankers, query classification, document & image understanding, real-time image processing, contributing to Cognitive Services API, generating exploration datasets, and rendering the user interface. As part of Bing MM team, you would be a key player in building innovative technology that powers scenarios across Bing, Skype, Windows, Cortana, Edge Browser, bots to name a few. You will also get opportunities to work with world class Microsoft Research teams. **Responsibilities** + Define metrics, choose data sources, develop judgment labeling guidelines + Train and evaluate machine learning models + Code online and offline pipeline components to support the models + Analyze and provide insights from data Our ideal candidate has: + Experience with the whole data science life cycle; such as formulating problems, identifying metric/objective, choosing data sources, gathering labels, building models meeting requirements (quality/speed/interpretability/supportability), shipping and supporting the models. + Knowledge of Information Retrieval, Natural Language Processing, or Computer Vision techniques + Experience with semi-supervised learning, active learning, outlier detection + Clearly demonstrated record of accomplishment in delivering results. + Passion, creative problem-solving skills, and ability to ramp up in new areas. + Ability to work independently and drive to get things done. + Scientific publications and experience of peer-review for journals / conferences **Qualifications** + A MS degree in Computer Science, Statistics or Applied Mathematics, Data Science, or Machine Learning. Ph.
