Position Details The Senior Metallurgist at ConMet's corporate headquarters in Vancouver, Washington will be part of the Engineering Team and is responsible for developing aluminum, ductile iron and gray iron materials, processes, engineering specifications, quality support, and metallurgical evaluations. This position will collaborate with engineering, the plants, QA and customers on new technology, products, processes that enhance product performance and value. Our Senior Metallurgist will also investigate opportunities for improving existing materials, processes, equipment, adherence to specifications, and technology for attaining cost reduction and continuous improvement goals. This is a newly created role and will be based in at our corporate headquarters in the Portland, Oregon area (Vancouver, Washington). For more info about ConMet in Vancouver and the Portland/Vancouver area, visit our local careers page: http://www.conmet.com/locations/vancouver-wa-hq/ Essential Duties and Responsibilities: + Provide companywide expertise and guidance on aluminum, ferrous materials, other metals, material development, material selection, material testing, coatings and failure analysis. + Provide companywide expertise and guidance on the relationship between materials and manufacturing processes focused mainly on casting, heat treating, and metalworking. + Investigate opportunities for improving existing materials, processes, equipment, and technology. + Provide hands-on support to production operations to implement cost reduction and productivity improvement projects. + Perform rigorous failure analysis. Conduct or manage laboratory testing and analysis. + Participate in the advanced quality planning process to take products from design into production. + Support prototype trials, materials analysis and performance characterization. + Participate in development and improvement of strategic suppliers. Qualifications Education and Experience: + Master's Degree or Ph.D. in Metallurgy, Materials Science / Engineering or related degree. + Three or more years of related experience. (An equivalent balance of education, training and experience may be considered) + Demonstrated expertise in aluminum and/or ferrous metallurgy. + Experience with manufacturing processes including casting, heat treating, and coating. + Material selection and qualification. + Metallurgical evaluation skills and failure mode analysis techniques and methodologies. + Personable with strong interpersonal and project management skills. + Strong communication skills, both verbal and written. + Innovative and able to drive new ideas thru to implementation. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: + Knowledge of physical and mechanical properties as well as evaluation methods (tensile strength, hardness, fatigue, fracture toughness, creep, SEM, non-destructive inspection, spectroscopy). + Experience with aluminum and/or ferrous casting processes + Understanding of the interaction between process variables, alloy chemistry and the resulting material performance. + Strong knowledge of casting solidification science and casting defect formation mechanisms. + Proven ability to effectively solve problems and lead problem-solving activities and teams. + Proven ability to lead a project from research to launch with a strong customer focus. + Six sigma Green/ Black Belt and or statistical data analysis skills desirable. + Ability and willingness to travel up to 20% domestically and internationally.
