The Senior Scientist will be primarily responsible for performing independent research and managing scientific and technical activities as part of a research program that supports R&D projects. This will comprise planning and conducting laboratory experiments and evaluating and interpreting data. This role may also include responsibility for the management of scientific staff and leadership of an aspect of, or an overall research project team.

Duties & Responsibilities:
Independently performs scientific experiments with a predefined goal including developing new methodologies, protocols and or test procedures that contribute to research goals ; may direct and oversee experimental design and results of technicians and junior level scientists.
Works cross-functionally with scientists in the disease areas of Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis / Interstitial Lung Disease, Inflammatory Bowel Diseases, Systemic Sclerosis and other immune-mediated diseases to develop and implement experimental plans to develop and validate new drug target concepts in the research portfolio.
Develops an understanding of R&D team goals and works effectively toward achieving them ; assumes departmental responsibility for drug discovery projects (across multiple therapeutic modalities) when necessary and/or participates as representative on multiple project teams and contributes to defining and executing on expertise-related aspects of overall program goals.
Prepares clear technical reports, publications and oral presentations: independently communicates results in the form of reports and/or presentations; presents clearly and effectively and defends own work at internal & external meetings; may deliver updates to senior level management in the context of overall project goals.
Keeps abreast of relevant literature and research project related competitive landscape; develops internal and external visibility outside of functional area via scientific and medical conference presentation / publications ; contributes to departmental administration & demonstrates fiscal responsibility with respect to cost of experiments, technology, external collaborations & travel.
Assumes responsibility for direct reports as needed including recruiting, managing and developing scientific staff (PhD & non PhD level); Manages and prioritizes multiple projects within the laboratory.
Complies with all applicable regulations; ensures that work performed in area of responsibility is conducted in a safe and compliant manner; maintains proper records and Electronic Lab. Notebooks in accordance with Standard Operating Protocols and policies.
Acts as a role model for integrative leadership in all aspects of late phase pre-clinical and early phase clinical drug development
Ph.D. degree in molecular and cellular immunology, cell biology, pharmacology, biochemistry or related area. Post-doctoral fellowship work experience is advantageous. Exposure to, and experience in, the area of early phase drug concept discovery, target identification and validation and project team leadership is desirable.
Demonstrates a broad knowledge of molecular pathways and cell biology linked to activation and pathobiology of immune system cells including, but not limited to, myeloid cells, epithelium, stromal tissue, dendritic cells and lymphocytes. Familiarity with the underlying biology of fibrosis as it relates to intestinal, skin and lung biology, immune-related diseases and aberrant tissue remodeling is a plus.
Has a demonstrated ability to apply a variety of state-of-the-art biochemical and immunological methods to monitor cytokine production, cell proliferation, apoptosis, cytotoxicity, reporter gene activities, and molecular signal transduction pathways and related biomarkers in response to small molecule, nucleic acid or therapeutic biologic reagents
Has solid hands-on experience with basic cell culture / genetic manipulation techniques as well as molecular and cell biology approaches to quantify nucleic acids, proteins and/or metabolites (TaqMan, Nanostring, RNAseq, Immunoprecipitation-Western, ELISA, immunohistochemistry, DuoLink, FACS, SeaHorse, ELISA, etc.) : adept at operating laboratory plate readers and liquid handling systems (UV/VIS, infrared, fluorescence, luminescence and radiometric).
Experience in outsourcing & management of molecular biology & reagent production activities.
Strong working knowledge of computer software including MicroSoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint and additional scientific analysis software including Prizm GraphPad, SpotFire, XL-Fit or comparable scientific data applications.
Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without restriction.
Must be willing to take a drug test and post-offer physical (if required)
