TITLE:SEXUAL ASSAULT AND DOMESTIC VIOLENCE ADVOCATE (CAMPUS BASED)
REPORTS TO: SUPERVISING COUNSELOR
EMPLOYMENT STATUS: Full Time
CLASSIFICATION LEVEL: Hourly
POSITION SUMMARY: Provide crisis intervention, case management, advocacy and follow-up services to victims of sexual assault, domestic violence and stalking; provide comprehensive services in partnership with police (campus and local), district attorney and other campus based and/or community-based agencies serving students. Stationed at select campuses in Erie County.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Maintain a commitment to the mission and work of Crisis Services with a deep appreciation for and sensitivity to the guiding principles of the organization.
- Assist in ensuring provision of Advocate Department services co-located at various campus settings; including but not limited to: crisis intervention response, follow up and outreach to clients, case management services, personal advocacy, and assistance with criminal justice and/or campus-based judicial (conduct) advocacy for students and campus employees who have experience sexual assault, intimate partner violence, domestic violence, and/or stalking.
- Represent the department and agency on campus based safety and/or violence prevention committees.
- Provide community education and outreach training to target populations, including campus and community groups.
- Identify and make referrals, as needed, to campus and community resources.
- Maintain accurate records and report information.
- Participate in mandatory agency meetings and quality assurance activities.
- Attend required training and professional development opportunities.
- Must have valid NYS driver's license and access to an automobile.
- On Call: Requires mandatory on call responsibilities as per agency and policy guidelines; which includes 24 hour on-call for direct services provide by the department, including Hospital On Call and Hotline On Call and/or consultation to department volunteers.
- Perform all other duties as assigned by supervisor for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the department.
Knowledge: Demonstrated knowledge of sexual violence, domestic violence and stalking dynamics and effects, public awareness and crisis intervention services. Understanding of New York State Enough is Enough Legislation. Clear and calm judgment centered on survivors, discretion and competency for strategic and diplomatic collaboration. Professional verbal and written communication skills. Must have excellent organizational skills, with great attention to detail, and be able to maintain accurate records. Experience with public speaking and training.
Ability to prioritize, flexibility, and experience in working on multiple tasks efficiently and effectively. Must be able to set goals and create timelines for implementation; must be able work independently on behalf of survivors and collaboratively with coworkers and colleagues. Strong ability to work effectively within and outside of the campus system in developing relationships and programs to address advocacy issues and needs.
Education: Bachelor's Degree or Master's degree from an accredited college and/or university in human service field, public health, social work or education
Experience: Bachelor's degree with minimum two years paid experience, preferably with victims of family violence/sexual assault OR Master's degree with minimum one year experience, preferably in working family violence/sexual assault. Experience with public speaking and providing education training preferred. Experience in higher education a plus.Excellent skills in assessing levels of emotional distress and reacting appropriately.Demonstrated ability to work with people of various ethnic, cultural and socio-economic backgrounds, sexual orientation and gender identities. Awareness of best practices of sexual violence prevention, risk reduction and survivor support strategies.
Internal: Will maintain productive relationships with agency management, program staff, volunteers, union officials and employees.
External: Will work collaboratively with a variety of stakeholders (e.g. area colleges/universities, government agencies, hospitals, and others as required) to increase training and staff development to increase awareness, education and best prevention practices.
ENVIRONMENTAL AND WORKING CONDITIONS:
- General office environment; no exposures to extreme heat, cold, dust, noise.
- Local travel (Erie County) required
- 40 hours a week
- Monday-Friday 9a-5p, potential evening(s) and/or weekends required occasionally.
PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS: Primarily a sedentary position with occasional standing, sitting, bending and reaching required. A high energy level; comfortable performing multi-faceted projects in conjunction with day-to-day activities.
