Effective September 1, 2018, paraeducators must meet the following requirements to be newly hired in the Puyallup School District:
Basic Education Qualifications
All paraeducators must have the first, essential credential —a high school diploma or GED (General Educational Development). Paraeducators can provide a copy of their high school diploma — transcripts are not necessary.
One of the following pathways must be met in order to meet Federal Title I guidelines:
Two years of study at an institution of higher education. The institution you choose must meet five criteria of the Higher Education Act, Section 101(a). All classes must be at level 100 or higher.
- Associate degree or higher. All associate degrees are acceptable.
- Pass the ETS ParaPro Assessment. The assessment measures skills, and content knowledge related to reading, writing and math. (ETS ParaPro Assessment). You may schedule the assessment with Puyallup School District at ETS Para Pro Test or a local testing center at www.ets.org/parapro/register/centers
- Washington paraeducator portfolio or apprenticeship program — completed previously. Those meeting the apprenticeship requirements must present a journey card or certificate. The portfolio and apprenticeships are no longer offered for enrollment, however OSPI will continue to honor this pathway.
