Job Summary/General Purpose of Job
Accountable for providing child-friendly legal orientation and legal screenings to detained unaccompanied children regarding immigration removal proceedings and access to representation. Also
responsible for additional follow-up legal services as required.
Ensure accurate and timely documentation of services delivered and information collected.
Principal Duties/Job Responsibilities
Provide child-friendly and age-appropriate legal orientation to detained children.
Conduct age-appropriate legal screening to assist with referral to pro bono counsel.
Assist with coordination of shelter services as necessary.
Stay apprised of current strategies in child education and classroom management as well as child-friendly interviewing.
Stay apprised of current legal framework relevant to orientation and interviewing related to child respondents in immigration removal
proceedings, including Texas mandatory reporting statute, as well as current events affecting child migration from Central America
and any other region commonly affecting detention facilities in South Texas.
Stay apprised of current strategies in serving particularly vulnerable populations including pregnant and parenting teens, tender-age children, children with special developmental needs, LGBTQI youth,
and children from Mayan language-speaking communities.
Performs other related duties as required.
Basic Qualifications & Interests
Possession of an Associate's Degree from an accredited college or
university.
Fluency in English and Spanish in written and spoken forms.
Intermediate proficiency in both the Microsoft Office Suite of products and with Google tools and products.
Preferred Qualifications & Interests
Possession of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university. Prior volunteer, community, or work experience
regarding immigration or detention. Prior work experience with children, particularly from Central America and including Mayan language-speaking populations. Prior non-profit experience, particularly involving field work or work in remote locations.
