Work closely with developers to launch projects by assessing the transmission for the sites. Responsibilities include supporting the development of utility-scale renewable energy projects (Wind, Solar, Geothermal & Energy Storage) in USA, Canada through generation interconnection process, address transmission congestion, deliverability issues and participate in several committees and trade organizations to advocate renewables in the respective regions of the electricity markets.
- Determines optimum strategy for interconnecting the project output to the electric grid based on system impact assessments and market delivery options. Use analytical tools and methods to determine optimum plan for interconnection.
- Assesses actual grid capacity in a region by reviewing and verifying technical studies performed by transmission providers and communicate and negotiate with regional transmission providers to develop the most efficient and cost-effective plan for integrating the project into the electric power grid.
- Participate in several committees including technical and policy based to advocate for and influence the decisions which are favorable for renewable energy projects.
- Perform Transmission Planning engineering studies and related functions within the US Business Development group responsible for evaluating and developing electric transmission solutions with associated or complementary transmission services, as necessary. Initial focus is expected within and across various US regional transmission areas of SPP, CAISO, PJM, MISO, ISO-NE and NYISO, as necessary.
- Perform all computer modeling necessary to conduct power flow and stability studies in support of Business Development opportunities and evaluation.
- Utilize a team approach to ensure consistent and thorough analysis in transmission planning studies and analysis.
- Incorporate innovative thinking into the development of comprehensive solutions.
- Run due diligence on interconnection process for late stage projects to adequately estimate timing and cost impacts, and provide guidance to origination, development engineering, and finance.
- For self-developed projects, work with the development engineering team to file all interconnect applications, identify potential issues, communicate them to the team, and provide recommendations to address them efficiently.
- Perform complete due diligence on interconnection and curtailment issues for potential acquisition projects.
- Document study findings in reports and prepare and defend recommendations
- Prepare and/or be a key contributor in developing project proposals.
- When necessary, manage engineering consultants’ work required to augment or complement various aspects of the projects.
- Work in a project team environment interacting with individuals with various technical specialties and industry experience.
- Fulfill a lead technical role to help ensure we are pursuing the best potential projects in a very timely manner.
- Resolve technical issues that may arise in different phases of a project development.
- 4 or more years of relevant work experience
- Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from an accredited engineering school.
- Experience or thorough knowledge of state-of-the-art techniques in power flow, short circuit and transient stability analyses. PSS/E, MUST, ASPEN and/or PowerWorld experience.
- Proficiency in Microsoft office and mobile software applications.
- Excellent work ethics with customer focus, flexibility, teamwork and continuous improvement.
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and through written documents.
- Ability to prioritize work and participate as a team member on multiple projects at one time.
- Ability to work in a fast paced environment with a competitive mindset.
- Valid driver's license with a clean driving record:
- A clean driving record means in the last 3 years, no driving-related suspension, revocation or cancellation, no disqualifying offenses, no more than 2 moving violations and no reckless driving incidents.
- In the last 5 years, no major driving offenses including DUI/DWI, refusal to test, leaving the scene, driving a commercial vehicle without a CDL, or at-fault fatal accident.
- Demonstrate a high level of personal initiative an ability to interact with company personnel, external engineering firms, regulatory representatives, and ISOs representatives in a positive, team building manner.
- Familiarity with ANSI standards, NESC, and IEEE standards.
- Transmission planning standards and criteria of NERC and one or more Regional Entities
- Participation within all RTO/ISO Regions.
- Knowledge of power systems: Protection system operation and reliability philosophy, Utility system practices, Three-phase power system theory/operation both static and dynamic, Short circuit theory/application, Motor generation theory/application, Reactive compensation theory, Substation configuration/construction/maintenance techniques, Transmission line configurations/design/maintenance techniques, Outage planning, and Congestion philosophy and analysis.
