Under the supervision of the Program manager, the Youth Advocate supports the Schoolyard Program by working on educational plans and fostering a positive working partnership with participants. The Youth Advocate assists youth with academics and socio-emotional transition from middle school to high school, as well as being a point-of-contact for resources. This position will work within a multidisciplinary team to foster a partnership between the family and school. In addition, the Youth Advocate will be providing regular contact with the students and their families, educational resources, academic counseling, and resources for appropriate academic and social services. The Youth Advocate will be serving as a support system to students in transition from village to urban life. Working together, the Youth Advocate and other YES staff will provide educational and supportive wrap-around services to students and families.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Represent CITC to partners in the community by serving as point of contact regarding participant management and scheduling of classes. Provides leadership to participants in matters relating to CITC programs and social services on-site that have bearing within the Native community both in and out of school.
- Contribute to and oversees site-specific program data by ensuring appropriate data is collected, entered into Schoolyard Program data system and reported.
- Review site reports and assists to provide data-based information and input necessary for decision-making, goal setting, and planning.
- Oversee program special projects by meeting with Schoolyard Staff, planning, organizing, delegating and following up on tasks to be accomplished.
- Promote quality programs and academic excellence, work with consultants to review project goals, plans, and processes to ensure program objectives are being met and innovative best practices are implemented.
- Respect youth, families, and staff by maintaining confidentiality, obtaining release forms as required, inviting all to share information, results, and best practices.
- Provide academic counseling by working with the team to improve achievement levels, decreasing the dropout rate, improving attendance, promoting post-secondary development, work with ASD school counselors, increasing cultural and career awareness and developing leadership skills
- Develop educational plans for enrolled participants and/or participants who need to be re-enrolled by working with participants on a one-on-one basis to develop graduation plan after assessing transcripts, test scores, credit checks, schedules, career and academic plans.
- Develop follow-up standards for participants’ educational plans.
- Develop internal referral system to connect participants referred from ASD to Social workers, training opportunities, and case managers as appropriate.
- Be knowledgeable of community services, CITC services, ASD services and is a referral agent to all of them.
- Collaborate with their team to ensure priority services to urgent need families using CITC services.
- Provide and coordinates intake with participants for Schoolyard Program.
- Collaborate with Schoolyard Program Staff to establish, develop and maintain protocols and data around social media group usage for Schoolyard participants.
- Collaborate with Schoolyard Program Staff to engage and train support network about social media group protocols and how to engage participants through the social media interface.
- Transport students to class sites, on field trips, cultural camps, or other locations within the State of Alaska.
- Provide oversight and guidance for youth during all off site field trips/cultural camps, and make decisions related to the safety and well-being of all youth during all off site excursions.
- Assist with academic tutoring and instruction.
- Maintain confidentiality according to policies and procedures.
- Perform all related duties as assigned.

- Well- developed computer skills, including database, spreadsheet, word processing and publishing programs.
- Demonstrated ability to think logically, methodically and accurately.
- Self-motivated and able to work under pressure to meet deadlines.
- Demonstrated ability to organize multiple activities and prioritize workload.
- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the social, educational, training and cultural needs of and resources for the Alaska Native/American Indian community.
- Bachelor’s degree in education, counseling, management, or similar field of study.
- Experience working with Alaska Native people, knowledge of their values and belief systems, their educational issues and ability to provide culturally relevant services.
- Five (5) years’ experience in implementing educational and/or social service programs within Alaska Native communities.
- Continued employment is contingent upon satisfactory completion of state and federal background check in compliance with the 1990 Indian Child Protection Act.
- Valid Alaska Driver’s License and be insurable under CITC’s automotive insurance, which requires a driver to be at least 21 years of age.
